Bus Aide

Job Title

Bus Aide Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Primary Purpose

Bus Aide will ride school bus and other passenger vehicles to assist driver and ensure a safe and orderly transportation of all students.

Qualifications

Education/Certification 1. High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency) preferred 2. Must be at least 18 years of age. 3. Applicant must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the applicant, before continuing within the process towards possible employment

Special Knowledge/ Skills

1. Proficient in English (Written and Verbal)

2. Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively

3. Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment

4. Ability to manage student behavior

5. Ability to work with children with disabilities

6. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals 7. Must successfully complete and remain current on trainings and certifications including CPR and First-Aid, that are offered through the department/District.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Student Management 1. Maintain good rapport with students, parents, guardians, and campus administration. 2. Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance. 3. Daily workplace attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the position. 4. Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to appropriate campus administrator and submit Bus Incident Reports, as required. 5. Work cooperatively with the driver in maintaining safe conditions on the bus. 6. Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. 7. Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs. 8. Secure students in seats, wheelchairs, or other devices used for the safe transport of students. 9. Escort students across street to/from curb.

Routes and Schedules 1. Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver. 2. Maintain a daily route schedule/sheet. 3. Maintain and submit a monthly roll call/attendance log.

Safety 1. Supervise use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats by students. 2. Follow emergency procedures and help drivers administer first aid, if necessary. 3. Operate equipment according to established safety procedures. 4. Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, securing, assisting students, etc.

Other 1. Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices. 2. Assist in providing a safe and positive riding experience for all students assigned to your bus. 3. Assist driver in performing pre-and post-trip inspections as needed. 4. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations. 5. Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus if necessary. 6. Must attend in-service, required trainings, and safety meetings as required by the department or district. 7. Must complete required online compliance courses and cybersecurity trainings as required. 8. Assist and guide a substitute driver to follow assigned route as needed. 9. Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, assisting students, etc. 10. Assist in keeping bus clean and neat. 11. Follow emergency procedures and help drive administer first aid if necessary. 12. Report and collaborate with driver and supervisor regarding concerns on the bus. 13. Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to established safety procedures. 14. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function. 15. Perform all other duties as assigned.

1. Maintain emotional control under stress.

2. Prolonged sitting, continual reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions.

3. Moderate walking and occasional lifting, heavy, 45 pounds or more.

4. Work outside, inside, exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.

5. Occasional exposure to biological hazards.

6. Requires performing tasks such as sitting, twisting and bending.

7. Work positions include kneeling and climbing, with extended reach above head (12 inches) and extended reach in front of body (14 inches).

8. Load and unload vehicle, lifting and pulling up to 20 pounds on hand device while operating the service door, opening and closing 15-60 times per shift.

9. Climb in and out of bus, through service door, 5-15 times per shift.

10. Physical ability to enter and exit the bus through the emergency exits.

Tools/Equipment Used: Operate; two-way radio; global positioning system (GPS); safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher.
