Position Details Title Director, Histotechnology Training Program Specific Title Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Assistant/Associate/Professor of Clinical Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Appointment Type Open Department IUSM – Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Campus IU School of Medicine Indianapolis Position Summary The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Director of the Histotechnology Training Program. In this role, the Director will oversee all aspects of program administration, including staff recruitment, development, and evaluation; curriculum design and implementation; student recruitment, admission, and advising; and strategic engagement with university, healthcare, and community partners. The Director will play a pivotal role in shaping a nationally recognized Histotechnology Training Program that prepares highly skilled professionals to support excellence in diagnostic pathology, research, and patient care. This is a unique opportunity to lead a growing educational program that directly impacts laboratory medicine and the future workforce in histotechnology. The Histotechnology Program at the Indiana University School of Medicine is a distance-education program delivered in partnership with each student’s qualifying histology laboratory. It blends academic coursework with hands-on clinical experience to build both technical knowledge and practical competence. The program prepares students for careers as histologic technicians and supports eligibility for certification through the ASCP Board of Certification as a histotechnician or histotechnologist. Since its launch in 1995, the program has graduated more than 1,180 students from 49 U.S. states and several countries, reflecting its broad reach and strong reputation. Graduates are equipped to work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, dermatopathology practices, public health facilities, industrial and veterinary laboratories, marine biology, and forensic pathology. Key Responsibilities Be responsible for the organization, administration, instruction, evaluation, continuous quality improvement, curriculum planning and development, directing other program faculty/staff, and general effectiveness of the program. Provide evidence that s/he participates in the budget preparation process. Engage in a minimum of 36 hours of documented continuing professional development every three years. Be responsible for maintaining NAACLS accreditation of the program. Have regular and consistent contact with students, faculty, and program personnel. Manage correspondence related to the program and liaison with all constituencies influencing Histologic Technology education. Monitor all facets of the program to assure quality. Advise students in academic progress and registration. Orient students to their responsibilities relative to the clinical affiliates. Promote and assist in the development of new clinical affiliates. Participate in affiliation and education coordinators’ meetings. Promote communication between clinical affiliates, the University, and students. Review and evaluate program and clinical affiliate resources. Assist in recruitment by attending school career days. Act as arbitrator for student and/or faculty grievances. Recommend professional certification for students who satisfactorily meet requirements. Work with program directors of other Health Professions Programs at IU, including our department’s Medical Laboratory Scientist and Cytotechnologist Training Programs. Perform all Recorder duties: end-of-term grade checks (Early Warning Roster) to track, advise, and monitor students for Academic Probation, Reinstatement, Dismissal; Conduct and maintain athletic eligibility verifications, SIS updates, class permissions, degree conferral, confirming class registrations, course descriptions, bulletins, etc. Coordinate commencement: intent forms for grads, verify lists from registrar, coordinate degree conferrals with department & school ceremony. Academic Appointment The academic track and rank of the appointment will be determined by qualifications and level of experience. Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution. Accredited colleges or universities in the U.S. are listed by the United States Department of Education (USDE). Three years of full-time experience in a clinical laboratory. ASCP BOC or ASCPi BOC certification as a Scientist of Histotechnology (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT). Knowledge of education methods and the NAACLS Accreditation Process. Title/Appointment Qualifications If the applicant’s highest degree is a bachelor’s, the appointment type and title options will be Lecturer or Senior Lecturer.
