The position is primarily responsible for supporting the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, documentation, and control of workplace health hazards. The technician will also perform assigned safety-professional duties involving field inspections, hazard-analysis reviews, pre-job planning, worker observations, corrective-action tracking, and compliance support. Activities requiring independent CIH or CSP professional judgment will be performed by, or under the direction of, an appropriately credentialed professional. Responsibilities and DutiesIndustrial Hygiene ResponsibilitiesSupport qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments for assigned facilities, work packages, processes, materials, and field conditions.Assist with developing exposure-monitoring strategies based on work scope, potential hazards, exposure routes, historical data, similar-exposure groups, and possible acute or chronic health effects.Conduct personal, area, task-based, and direct-reading monitoring using approved methods and calibrated equipment.Monitor potential exposures to airborne contaminants, respirable crystalline silica, asbestos, lead, metals, welding fumes, particulates, nuisance dust, volatile organic compounds, solvents, coatings, adhesives, chemicals, noise, vibration, heat and cold stress, illumination, biological agents, and ergonomic stressors.Prepare, calibrate, operate, inspect, maintain, and store industrial-hygiene instruments and sampling equipment.Maintain accurate field notes, calibration logs, sampling records, chain-of-custody forms, laboratory reports, exposure notifications, and data-quality documentation.Coordinate the submission of samples to approved analytical laboratories and track results through receipt and evaluation.Assist the supervising CIH with interpreting monitoring results against applicable OSHA exposure limits and authorized NIOSH, ACGIH, DOE, and project-specific occupational-exposure criteria.Promptly report suspected overexposures, unusual monitoring results, worker symptoms, complaints, control failures, or changing exposure conditions.Communicate approved monitoring findings and protective requirements to workers, supervisors, project management, occupational medicine, and site industrial-hygiene personnel.Recommend and help validate controls using the hierarchy of controls, emphasizing elimination, substitution, isolation, containment, engineering controls, local exhaust ventilation, and improved work practices before reliance on PPE.Evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of respiratory-protection, ventilation, hearing-conservation, heat-stress, chemical-management, hazardous-material, and ergonomic controls.Support respirator selection, medical-evaluation coordination, fit-testing, cartridge-change determinations, equipment inspections, and respiratory-protection documentation.Review Safety Data Sheets, chemical inventories, work packages, procedures, permits, Job Hazard Analyses, Activity Hazard Analyses, and pre-task plans for occupational-health hazards and required controls.Assist with reviewing new or modified activities involving hazardous materials, carcinogens, highly toxic substances, process gases, coatings, adhesives, sealants, solvents, and other chemicals before their introduction into the workplace.Support investigations of suspected occupational illnesses, employee exposure concerns, monitoring anomalies, and failed industrial-hygiene controls.Prepare or deliver approved hazard-specific training and technical briefings for supervisors, craft personnel, employees, and subcontractors.Coordinate with qualified radiological-control personnel when activities interface with radiological areas or requirements. The role will coordinate with client project management and EHS personnel; Savannah River Site industrial-hygiene, safety, engineering, quality, environmental, and operations organizations; DOE/NNSA representatives; field supervision; craft personnel; subcontractors; vendors; analytical laboratories; occupational medicine; emergency-response organizations; and radiological-control personnel.Work will be performed at authorized facilities, buildings, construction areas, or project locations within the Savannah River Site. The final task order or work authorization will establish the specific location, technical scope, work boundaries, hazards, schedule, deliverables, and reporting relationships.The position requires frequent walking and standing, climbing stairs and ladders, navigating uneven surfaces, entering active or restricted work areas, and wearing required PPE. Work may occur indoors or outdoors in heat, cold, humidity, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions. The employee may be required to carry industrial-hygiene instruments and related equipment weighing approximately 25 pounds.When respiratory protection is required, the employee must satisfy all applicable medical-evaluation, training, and fit-testing requirements.
