The overall job of the general manager is overseeing day-to-day operations, managing budgets, hiring and training staff, developing growth strategies, evaluating employee performance, ensuring compliance with regulations, coordinating teams, and making strategic decisions to achieve business goals across various departments within a company or business unit. 

Key responsibilities of a general manager:

Operational Management:

Overseeing daily operations and ensuring smooth workflow 

Monitoring performance metrics and identifying areas for improvement 

Implementing operational policies and procedures 

Managing project timelines and task assignments 

Staff Management:

Recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new employees 

Providing training and development opportunities for staff 

Evaluating employee performance and providing feedback 

Addressing employee concerns and resolving conflicts 

Financial Management:

Creating and managing budgets 

Analyzing financial reports and identifying cost-saving measures 

Forecasting revenue and profitability 

Strategic Planning:

Developing and implementing business growth strategies 

Identifying market trends and opportunities 

Setting organizational goals and objectives 

Customer Focus:

Ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction 

Managing customer relationships and resolving complaints 

Monitoring market feedback and adapting strategies accordingly 

Leadership and Communication:

Inspiring and motivating team members 

Communicating effectively with staff at all levels 

Building strong relationships with stakeholders 

The specific duties of a general manager will vary depending on the day and what is needed.

A general manager reports directly to the owner and oversee multiple departments. 

Strong leadership skills, analytical abilities, and excellent communication are crucial for success..

Below are some but not limited to this list of specific duties 

Morning Duties

Start time is 7:45am.

Turn on all lights and pertinent machines

Turn HVAC system on

Boot up all computers.

Log into email, skim through to determine what needs the most attention such as rush jobs etc...

Check that all customers are contacted via phone AND email for jobs that are ready

Check in with production for any needs or concerns, such as bigger jobs coming in they should be made aware of, or any issues with the machines.

Staff Delegation:

Make sure all depts are aware of any jobs that have specific due dates are on track to meet the deadline.

Delegate any responsibility to ensure jobs are completed on time, i.e. delivery, pick up paper etc.... 

Invoices:

Maintaining PrintSmith software so it is up to date with pricing and stock catagories.

Using Rocket’s system for processing orders from emails and etc...

Turn times are always 1-2 business days for common products, business cards, postcards, flyers etc

ABSOLUTLEY NO EMAILS WILL GO UNANSWERED BEFORE THE CLOSE OF BUSINESS.

Pre-Press:

Fixing customer artwork for minor issues. 

Any artwork that will take more than 10 mins is to be handed off to graphic design.

Working with production creating a seamless system to process proof orders.

Making sure art dept is using the Rocket digital filing system

Outside Vendors:

Contacting and maintaining good relationships with Rocket’s outside vendor network

Website:

Keeping in contact with web dept.

Watching pricing and functionality. 

Store Appearance:

Keeping the store clean. 

The store is to be cleaned/dusted daily, This includes the bathroom.

Daily/Monthly Closeout:

A daily closeout must be performed and filed in file cabinet at the close of business everyday.

A monthly closeout must be performed and filed on the last business day of each month.

Monthly Billing:

All statements are to be in the mail on the 1st of every month.

All checks received for A/R are to be posted and deposited at the bank upon arrival.

Sales & Bonuses:

All statements are to be in the mail on the 1st of every month.

All checks received for A/R are to be posted and deposited at the bank upon arrival.
