About the team Our Community team builds direct relationships with people who use our technology, channels their insights back to product and research teams, and amplifies their stories so others can learn from them. The Student Community team is building OpenAI Student Collective, a global program that equips students with community, resources, and support to help their peers build AI capability, confidence, and opportunity. Students are often among the first to discover new ways to learn, build, create, and organize with AI. Our job is to find those examples, support the students behind them, and help their stories travel. About the role We’re hiring an Editorial Lead to build the storytelling engine for the OpenAI Student Collective. This person will stay close to how students are actually using ChatGPT, Codex, APIs, and future OpenAI products, identify the most compelling use cases and people, and turn them into stories, resources, campaigns, and internal insights. The work combines editorial judgment, writing, reporting, community instinct, and creative production. You should be AI-obsessed: actively using the tools yourself, paying attention to who else is using them in surprising ways, and excited to experiment with new formats for telling stories. You’ll own our student storytelling system across three surfaces: a community-owned public channel, amplification through partnering with teams that run larger company channels (e.g. Instagram, TikTok, etc.) and internal storytelling that brings OpenAI teams closer to real student use cases. What you’ll do Build and maintain a public home for student stories, project spotlights, guides, and learning resources, such as a Substack, Codex site, or other owned channel. Develop a regular publishing cadence that helps students learn from one another and shows the world what students are building with OpenAI. Interview students, review projects and artifacts, and identify the people, use cases, and moments worth amplifying. Turn student examples into clear, compelling stories across formats, including written profiles, social posts, short videos, demos, guides, and internal briefs. Run the recruitment marketing campaign for the Student Collective, including the promotional site, launch messaging, student proof points, calls to action, and campaign moments. Partner with Social, Comms, Stories Engine, Marketing, Education, Product, and agency partners to amplify the strongest stories through larger channels. Own the internal storytelling loop, product/team roadshows, and cross-functional readouts. Work with regional Community Managers to source stories, spot emerging trends, and understand what students need. Experiment with AI-native editorial workflows, including using ChatGPT, Codex, ImageGen, video tools, and other emerging tools to move faster and create better work. Build the systems and templates that make student storytelling repeatable across markets. What we’re looking for Excellent writing and editorial judgment, ideally with experience in journalism, communications, editorial, social, content strategy, or documentary-style storytelling. Strong interviewing instincts and the ability to identify what is genuinely interesting, credible, specific, and worth sharing. Taste for translating technical or emerging use cases into accessible stories, examples, and resources. Deep curiosity and fluency with AI tools. You should be actively using tools like ChatGPT, Codex, or creative AI tools, and paying attention to how others are using them. High agency and comfort building something from zero in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment. Strong organization and follow-through across a pipeline of students, stories, channels, approvals, and partners. Experience working with students, creators, developers, educators, community programs, or internet-native audiences. Good judgment around privacy, consent, confidentiality, and representing student stories responsibly. Bonus: Creative production ability across formats; video editing, short-form social production, demo creation, or multimedia storytelling experience is a strong plus. The ideal candidate The strongest candidates may come from journalism, communications, editorial, social, documentary production, creator strategy, education, developer relations, community, or content roles. The exact background matters less than the combination of AI obsession, strong writing, editorial taste, production ability, and curiosity about students.
