Certified Nurse Midwife

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM/CM) provides comprehensive women's health care across the lifespan in hospital and clinic setting. This role delivers evidence-based prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn, gynecologic, family planning, and preventive health services. The Certified Midwife partners closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and care teams to provide patient-centered care that supports the mission of delivering accessible, high-quality rural healthcare.

The Certified Midwife practices within the scope of licensure and hospital bylaws, promotes wellness and patient education, and helps strengthen access to maternal and women's health services in the rural community.

Essential Job Functions

• Provides comprehensive prenatal care, including initial obstetric evaluations, ongoing prenatal visits, risk assessment, and patient education.

• Manages labor and delivery for low-risk obstetrical patients, including triage, vaginal delivery, and immediate postpartum care (if obstetric services are provided).

• Provides postpartum follow-up and newborn assessments within scope of practice.

• Performs gynecologic care including:

o Annual wellness exams


o Pap smears and cervical cancer screening


o Contraceptive counseling and management


o Menopause management


o Diagnosis and treatment of common gynecologic concerns

• Orders, interprets, and communicates diagnostic tests, lab work, and imaging as appropriate.

• Prescribes medications and treatments in accordance with licensure and prescriptive authority.

• Identifies high-risk pregnancies or complications and initiates consultation, referral, or transfer to higher-acuity care as needed.

• Provides lactation support and breastfeeding education.

• Documents timely and accurately in the electronic medical record.

• Collaborates with physicians, nursing, and ancillary departments to coordinate patient care.

• Participates in referral and transfer coordination with regional OB/GYN and specialty care partners.

• Communicates effectively with patients and families regarding treatment plans and education.

• Supports continuity of care across clinic, inpatient, and community settings.

• Maintains compliance with hospital policies, clinical protocols, and regulatory standards.

• Participates in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives related to women's health and maternal care.

• Supports SHC accreditation requirements.

• Participates in peer review and clinical staff meetings as requested.

• Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.

• Promotes women's health education in the community.

• Participates in outreach and relationship-building to improve access to maternal health services.

• Supports recruitment and retention of women's health services within the organization.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited nurse-midwifery or midwifery education program.

• Current certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) through the American Midwifery Certification Board or current certification as a Certified Midwife (CM) where recognized/licensed.

• Current unrestricted Idaho license as:

o Registered Nurse and APRN with nurse-midwifery certification (for CNM), or

o Midwife license/credential as required by Idaho law (for CM).

• Current DEA registration (if prescribing controlled substances).

• Current BLS certification.

• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification or ability to obtain within required timeframe.

• Ability to obtain medical staff privileges per hospital bylaws.
