Job Title: Overhead Door Service Technician Job Description

This role focuses on the hands-on installation, service, and repair of overhead door systems and electric garage door openers across commercial and residential sites. You travel to customer locations, assess door systems for installation or repair, and ensure every system operates safely and correctly. The position offers the opportunity to work with mechanical, electrical, and construction components while learning from experienced technicians and growing your technical skill set.

Responsibilities

• Travel to customer sites in the Lafayette and surrounding area to perform installation, service, and repair of overhead door systems and electric garage door openers.

• Assess existing door systems to determine required installation, maintenance, or repair work.

• Set and install overhead doors, including mounting tracks, panels, and related hardware.

• Calibrate, adjust, and test electric garage door openers to ensure smooth and safe operation.

• Perform basic electrical wiring to connect openers, sensors, and motors according to schematics and safety standards.

• Install and hook up safety sensors, controls, and motor units, verifying proper functionality.

• Conduct inspections of installed systems to confirm that doors and openers operate correctly and meet quality standards.

• Fabricate custom doors or parts when needed using welding, shaping, cutting, and fastening tools.

• Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively during installation and repair tasks.

• Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to guide installation and wiring work.

• Communicate professionally with customers on-site, explaining work performed and answering basic questions about operation and maintenance.

• Work alongside senior technicians, following instructions and safety protocols while contributing to team productivity.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area in trucks, at the shop, and at job sites.

• Adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines while working with mechanical and electrical systems.

• Report job progress, issues, and completed work accurately to supervisors or designated team leads.

Essential Skills

• Mechanical aptitude and the ability to work with moving mechanical systems such as doors, tracks, and openers.

• Basic electrical skills, including familiarity with wiring, sensors, and motors.

• Experience using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.

• Comfort working in construction or general labor environments, including on-site work at customer locations.

• Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and schematics.

• Strong attention to detail when installing, adjusting, and testing door and opener systems.

• Professional communication skills for interacting with customers and team members.

• Positive attitude and strong willingness to learn new skills and techniques.

• Reliability in showing up on time and completing assigned tasks during the workday.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Prior experience in overhead door installation, service, or repair is highly valued and may qualify for higher pay.

• Experience in mechanical, electrical, construction, or general labor roles is beneficial.

• Familiarity with inspection processes for mechanical and electrical systems.

• Ability to interpret more complex blueprints and wiring schematics is a plus.

• Experience with welding, shaping, and fastening tools for fabricating custom parts is advantageous.

• Comfort working in a field service environment, traveling between multiple job sites in a day.

Work Environment

You start your day at the company shop, then ride in trucks with senior technicians to job sites throughout Lafayette and the surrounding market. The role is field-based, with most work performed at customer locations in a construction or industrial setting. Typical hours are approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:00–4:30 p.m., with a 30–60 minute unpaid lunch break. You regularly use hand tools, power tools, and occasionally welding and fabrication equipment, working both indoors and outdoors depending on the job site. The environment is active and hands-on, requiring adherence to safety practices and appropriate work attire suitable for construction and field service work.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lafayette, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
