Job Description

This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting efficient laboratory workflows. You will collect, process, and store patient specimens according to established procedures, ensure accurate labeling and documentation, and assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvements in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles on a wide range of patients, including pediatric through geriatric populations.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, to patients before and during the process.
• Collect, label, and handle specimens according to established procedures and test orders, ensuring accuracy and completeness at every step.
• Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure correct patient identification and test ordering.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout processing.
• Store specimens at appropriate temperatures and in proper containers or tubes, following protocol-specific procedures to preserve sample quality for transport and testing.
• Package specimens securely for transport, following all guidelines to maintain specimen integrity and chain of custody.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support safe and compliant laboratory operations.

Essential Skills

• At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
• Demonstrated proficiency in blood draws and venipuncture on pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
• Hands-on experience with specimen collection, labeling, handling, processing, storage, and transport preparation.
• Ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles safely and effectively.
• Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes.
• Competence in using a centrifuge and preparing samples for freezing or further processing.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and communication.
• Experience with data entry related to patient specimens and laboratory workflows.
• High School diploma and/or GED completion.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or similar biological sample environments.
• Background in medical assisting or related healthcare support roles.
• Familiarity with specimen management and storage workflows, including patient specimen tracking.
• Experience with Cerner or similar electronic health record or laboratory information systems.
• Exposure to pediatric phlebotomy techniques and best practices.
• Phlebotomy certification is not required but may be beneficial.

Work Environment

This role operates in a clinical and laboratory setting with both rover and stationary schedule options. Rover schedules involve working in LaGrange in the mornings and another nearby location in the afternoons, with typical hours such as Monday and Friday 7:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. in LaGrange and 1:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. in the afternoon location; Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. in LaGrange and 1:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. in the afternoon location; and Wednesday 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. in LaGrange and 1:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. in the afternoon location. Stationary schedules based in LaGrange typically run Monday and Friday 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and Wednesday 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for data entry and result review, with potential use of Cerner or similar platforms. The environment is fast-paced and patient-facing, requiring frequent interaction with individuals of all ages. Safety and regulatory compliance are central, with adherence to OSHA and DEP guidelines and participation in annual department trainings. Candidates may receive compensation for mileage and drive time when applicable, reflecting the travel involved in rover assignments. Dress is typically professional clinical attire appropriate for a phlebotomy and laboratory setting, with required safety gear and protective equipment as needed.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of LaGrange, IN.

The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $26.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
