Biology Science Center Lab Aide - Student Position Overview The Biology Science Center (BSC) Lab Aide will perform routine tasks required for the ongoing operation of science labs and laboratory preparation areas, including the greenhouse, with supervision. Responsibilities include checking labs, restocking supplies, inspecting for maintenance needs, cleaning equipment, and providing general assistance to lab assistants and students. Responsibilities Perform routine cleaning and organization of labs, greenhouse, and preparation areas. Check labs and restock supplies such as gloves, paper towels, soap, DI water, and other items. Inspect labs for maintenance requirements, including leaks and eye‑wash functionality. Wash, rinse, dry, and store laboratory glassware; clean dissection equipment with animal tissue. Clean sinks, refrigerators, tables, hotplates, lab scales, models, microscopes, and greenhouse plants. Assist BSC lab assistants with lab setup, building equipment, and office tasks, including front‑desk assistance. Participate in required safety training and follow all safety regulations and policies. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Positive communication and human‑relations skills. Adherence to policies, procedures, and safety guidelines. Initiative to perform duties independently with minimal supervision. Physical Demands & Working Conditions Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs; frequent lifting up to 20 lbs. Frequent standing and walking within the lab. Operation of equipment involving repetitive hand and wrist motions. Use of computer and other office/lab equipment. Exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, and gases. Preferred Qualifications Previous greenhouse experience or plant knowledge. Comfortable working in an environment with dissected animals. Employment Requirements Must be a current OCCC student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester (or 3 credit hours in summer) or a current OCCC student with a federal work‑study award. Work Hours 10–25 hours per week with a flexible schedule, including daytime, evening, and Saturday hours (Saturday hours only during Spring and Fall semesters).
