Build a newsworthy career at the FT. The role The Financial Times is looking for an outstanding reporter to lead our coverage of the US private credit industry from New York. This is a sourcing-first role for a journalist with exceptional reporting instincts and a proven ability to build trusted relationships across the financial industry. You will cultivate deep networks among private credit firms, banks, insurers, law firms, advisers and borrowers, turning those relationships into agenda-setting exclusives and market-moving stories. You will cover the firms reshaping how corporate America is financed, including Apollo, Ares, Blackstone, Blue Owl, KKR, Sixth Street and Oaktree. Your reporting will examine their strategies, investment performance, competitive dynamics and growing influence across global finance. A key focus of the beat is the intersection of private credit and the insurance industry. As annuity and life insurance balance sheets increasingly provide capital to private credit funds, you will explore the implications for regulation, financial stability and the growing pool of illiquid assets supporting Americans' retirement savings. This is a major area of strategic coverage for the FT and offers significant opportunities for original reporting. The beat follows wherever capital flows. You'll cover the financing of leveraged buyouts, the funding demands of the AI boom, refinancing activity for stressed borrowers, and the restructurings, defaults and creditor disputes that emerge when deals unravel. Success in this role will come from identifying where risks are building before they become obvious to the wider market. Working closely with colleagues covering corporate finance, dealmaking, private capital, financial institutions and markets across the FT's global newsroom, you will contribute regularly to the Due Diligence newsletter and help shape the FT's broader coverage of one of the fastest-growing and most influential sectors in global finance. We are looking for Proven ability to break exclusive stories and cultivate deep, trusted source networks. Strong news judgement with an eye for scoops and agenda-setting journalism. Ability to translate complex financial market concepts into clear, engaging stories for a broad audience. Equally comfortable writing fast-paced breaking news, front-page exclusives and in-depth Big Reads. Excellent reporting, interviewing and writing skills. A collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively across teams and international bureaux. Experience covering private credit, leveraged finance, private equity, banking or capital markets. Knowledge of the insurance industry and its growing role in private capital. Experience contributing to newsletters or other audience-focused digital products. Salary range A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $95,000 to $135,000 . To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary within the estimated salary range based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skill set; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. This position is open to a broad pool of candidates, both internal and external. Where an external candidate is hired or a successful internal candidate is appointed to the role on terms covered by the collective bargaining agreement, they will be represented by the News Media Guild (NMG).
