Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel, Legal Affairs Division, the Attorney III provides a broad range of professional legal services to the Department of Consumer Affairs and the Department's boards and bureaus on complex and sensitive issues, and with broad discretion and independence, and a minimum of supervision. The Attorney III must possess the ability to interact independently, professionally and courteously with all staff, including the Department’s boards and bureaus, while performing multiple tasks that often require stringent deadlines.Please refer to the duty statement for specific duties.

Working Conditions
Candidates who reside outside of the State of California may be admitted to the job interview. However, they must reside in the State of California once they are hired and start working.
Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee's monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period as outlined on "Section 2113 - Personal Leave Program (PLP)" of the CalHR Manual. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.
Special Requirements
Conflict of Interest: This position is subject to Title 16, section 3830 of the California Code of Regulations, the Department of Consumer Affairs' Conflict of Interest Regulations. The incumbent is required to submit a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700) within 30 days of assuming office, annually by April 1, and within 30 days of leaving office.
Licensing requirement: Incumbent must maintain active membership in the California State Bar and be a member in good standing.
Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Experience advising a public regulatory entity or other organization and developing subject matter expertise in a variety of complex subjects.
• Experience providing legal advice to public bodies subject to state or local open meeting requirements.
• Experience drafting/reviewing rules, regulations, and/or proposed legislation.
• Experience developing training materials and providing training in complex legal subjects.
• Experience providing legal advice on administrative licensing/discipline matters.
• Experience drafting contracts, including memorandums of understanding, inter-agency agreements, or development agreements.
• Experience in litigation, including preparing briefs and making court appearances.
