Join the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) and play a key role in Indiana’s emergency planning, operations, and public safety. In this public accounting position you will ensure compliance with financial standards, support budgeting, and help maintain the integrity of financial records across the agency. About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) The IDHS leads Indiana’s emergency planning and operations, first responder training, and fire and building safety. The agency also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and oversees building code enforcement and fire investigations. Salary Statement Starting salary of $47,320.00, commensurate with education and experience. Day In The Life Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records and financial reports to assess compliance with procedural standards. Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, and financial commitments to project future revenues and expenses or provide advice. Assist the supervisor in analyzing budgets, preparing periodic reports comparing budgeted costs to actual costs. Advise the controller or supervisor on the status of assigned accounts. Assist in the development of general policies for fiscal programs. Assist management in preparing agency or program area budget requests. Reconcile complex discrepancies between accounts and notifies the appropriate department or supervisor of errors. Prepare reports for reconciliation of grant‑funded accounts. Analyze and interpret financial statements and reports for accuracy. Serve as liaison between agency and the federal government or other funding sources for assigned account. Coordinate computerized accounting systems within assigned area. Control the flow of appropriated funds. Direct the work of lower‑level accountants and account clerks in complex or unusual situations. The job profile is not designed to encompass every activity; other duties may be assigned at any time. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base bi‑weekly salary. What You’ll Need For Success Specialized knowledge of public accounting theories, principles, and practices. Specialized knowledge of agency organization and function. Specialized knowledge of federal and state accounting and bookkeeping laws, policies, and procedures. Specialized knowledge of automated accounting systems. Ability to solve complex accounting methods to meet agency needs. Ability to prepare budgets. Ability to prepare and interpret complex financial statements and reports. Ability to reconcile discrepancies between accounts. Effective communication skills.
