Job Summary If you are a journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic with experience working on heavy‑duty trucks, CAT D9 bulldozers, and similar vehicles, the Solid Waste Division of the King County Department of Natural Resources has an excellent opportunity for you! We are hiring for an HD Mechanic position in our Operations Section. What You Will Be Doing Diagnose and repair gas, diesel, electric, and hybrid‑powered vehicles and equipment, including light and heavy‑duty trucks, backhoes, dozers, street sweepers, loaders, and refuse trailers. Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and replace ignition systems, fuel systems, lighting systems, electrical/computer control systems, and ABS brake systems. Maintain and document service, maintenance, repair records, and work orders. Provide technical assistance, resolve problems with work orders, and advise on complex or unusual projects. Read and interpret manuals, electrical and schematic drawings, and illustrated parts diagrams. Use a Windows‑based computer program for tracking all work performed and retrieving information about work to be performed. Qualifications You Bring A minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy‑duty diesel vehicles and construction equipment, and medium and light‑duty automotive vehicles repair and maintenance. OR two (2) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy‑duty diesel vehicle and construction equipment or automotive repair and maintenance, and completion of a two‑year vocational, military, community college diesel automotive mechanics program or an accredited, recognized state‑approved apprenticeship program. OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skill to perform the work of the position. Experience and knowledge of safe workplace practices. Knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, Faster, and diagnostic software. Required Licenses Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with current Medical Card or ability to obtain one within six (6) months of employment. It Would Be Great if You Also Bring ASE Certification (Premium). Work Location and Schedule Location: SWD Maintenance Facility, Renton – 201 SW 34th Street, Renton 98057. Schedule: Multiple schedules are available including Mon‑Fri. 0600‑2:30 pm, Mon‑Fri. 2:30‑11:00 pm, Sun‑Wed. 0600‑4:30 pm, Wed‑Sat. 0600‑4:30 pm. Physical Requirements and Environment Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crouch and be in awkward positions at times. Some lifting may be required. Must be able and willing to work in an industrial site setting with adverse conditions such as dust, odor, high volume noise, and heavy traffic. FLSA Status: This position is overtime‑eligible.
