Research Lab Technician

The Research Lab Technician covers a broad range of duties. The primary role is to independently perform predefined skilled laboratory tasks, including product inspection using scanning electron microscope (SEM), sample preparation, and biological wet lab work. Essential Duties and Responsibilities SEM inspection Perform SEM inspection of production parts, development samples, and customer samples according to predefined procedures. Develop foundational knowledge of SEM operation to apply for novel sample imaging requirements. Follow applicable procedures, work instructions, safety practices, documentation, and quality system requirements Lab testing and sample preparation Prepare samples for laboratory testing, inspection, and customer evaluations. Perform independently routine laboratory tests according to approved protocols, work instructions, or supervisor direction. Support specialized testing like cell culture, bacterial culture, materials testing, and other laboratory studies. Take initiative to record nuances of test conditions, observations, deviations, and results. Lab organization and inventory Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment. Track laboratory supplies, consumables, chemicals, hazardous waste, samples, and communicate restocking/disposal needs. Support equipment organization, calibration awareness, maintenance tracking, and general lab readiness. Data and communication Compile testing and inspection data into clear summaries, spreadsheets, or reports. Provide regular status updates and prompt notification if communicated expectations cannot be met. Actively participate in cross-functional communication with R&D, Quality, Operations, and Commercial teams. Process improvement Identify opportunities for improvement in all aspects of their role. Support development, revision, and validation of laboratory work instructions. Help create repeatable systems for routine tests, inspections, and sample handling. Experience/Education B.S. in chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering or other relevant major. Experience in a medical device company that conducts materials development and advanced materials manufacturing is preferred. Prior experience using electron microscope and biomedical research tools preferred. This role involves the use of chemistry and biological labs containing hazardous, potentially deadly, samples including, but not limited to, hydrofluoric acid, high concentration acids, animal tissues, BSL2 bacteria, multidrug resistant bacteria strains, primary cell lines, and high voltage systems. Personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, lab coat, and gloves, is required in many areas associated with this position. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
