Job Description

The Phlebotomist II supports a high-volume laboratory or hospital setting by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, and maintaining specimen integrity throughout the testing process. This role also assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement, while delivering clear, courteous communication to patients and collaborating closely with clinical and laboratory staff.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other blood draws accurately and safely using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced environment.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy prior to collection and processing.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens securely for transport, following specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
• Follow detailed protocols and procedures for specimen handling and transport, as outlined for each test or program.
• Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support laboratory operations.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough documentation of all collections and processes.
• Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results when appropriate to address inquiries.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
• Attend annual department trainings and remain current on procedures, safety requirements, and workflow changes.
• Demonstrate reliable punctuality and consistent attendance to support dependable laboratory and patient services.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED with 2–4 years of overall work experience.
• Proficiency in performing venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of laboratory requisitions with specimen tubes and labels.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and data entry tasks.
• Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols accurately.
• Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and safety practices.
• Strong reliability, with punctuality and attendance described as extremely important.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a fast-paced clinical environment such as a hospital or high-volume laboratory.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients when explaining collection procedures.
• Experience answering phones and relaying or reading laboratory results to address inquiries.
• Ability to participate in and apply information from annual departmental trainings.
• Comfort with troubleshooting routine phlebotomy and specimen handling issues and suggesting workflow improvements.
• Capacity to assist with training others on proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where phlebotomists perform frequent blood draws and handle a high volume of specimens. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and various collection tubes and containers, and will follow established protocols for labeling, processing, and storing specimens at appropriate temperatures. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to OSHA and DEP safety regulations, including decontamination procedures and proper handling of biological materials. Work typically involves using computer systems and the Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information, verify orders, and document activities. Reliable punctuality and consistent attendance are critical, as the team depends on predictable coverage to maintain smooth workflow and timely patient services.

This is a Contract position based out of Wichita, KS.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
