Database Administrator III

The DRC-Database Administrator 3 (DBA3) is responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance optimization of Microsoft SQL Server environments across on-premises and Azure platforms. This role ensures high availability, disaster recovery, security compliance, and supports both development teams and IT infrastructure to maintain robust and scalable database solutions. The position requires collaboration with security officers and IT leadership, as well as participation in disaster recovery and incident response teams when needed. Responsibilities:

• Install, configure, patch, and upgrade SQL Server instances in production, staging, and development environments.
• Manage server storage, system databases, and data file structures to ensure optimal performance.
• Proactively monitor system health and tune performance by optimizing indexes, queries, and resolving blocking or deadlocks.
• Design, test, and execute backup and disaster recovery policies, including High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions such as Always On Availability Groups and Failover Clusters.
• Develop and maintain documentation for installation, monitoring, security policies, configuration changes, and best practices.
• Implement and enforce strict security standards including role-based access control, encryption, and compliance with state regulations.
• Provide developer support including schema design, code review, and query optimization.
• Automate routine maintenance tasks using T-SQL, PowerShell, and command-line scripts.
• Administer Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines including backup, monitoring, and security configurations.
• Collaborate with IT architecture, CIO, and managers to design scalable database solutions and contribute to business case development.
• Serve as Tier III support for critical database issues ensuring system stability and continuity.
• Mentor peers and junior staff through formal guidance and documentation.
• Participate in Disaster Recovery/Business Resumption and Incident Response Teams as required, possibly involving 24/7 operations at remote locations.

• Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience managing enterprise-level Microsoft SQL Server environments including on-premises and Azure platforms.
• Expertise with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and deep understanding of database internals.
• Advanced proficiency in Transact-SQL (T-SQL) programming.
• Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and ETL workflows.
• Strong knowledge of Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs.
• Experience implementing security and compliance measures including role-based access control (RBAC), encryption, and user permissions.
• Proven ability in performance monitoring, tuning, and troubleshooting complex database issues.
• Familiarity with Azure services such as Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, and Azure Backup.
• Experience with database migration between on-premises and Azure environments.
• Ability to write automation scripts using T-SQL, PowerShell, or command line tools.

• Experience with third-party monitoring and backup tools such as Redgate.
• Knowledge of database security, networking, scalability, and cost optimization in Azure environments.
• Experience designing and deploying High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions tailored to hardware and system needs.
• Prior experience mentoring technical staff and contributing to formal documentation and training.

• Candidate must comply with strict government regulations prohibiting the use or removal of government equipment outside the United States.
• Fingerprint background check required.
• Candidate must reside in Ohio.
• Candidate may be required to participate in 24/7 operations for disaster recovery or incident response teams at remote locations.
• Compliance with all DRC onboarding requirements within specified timeframes is mandatory.

• Initially remote work with potential transition to on-site work at 1221 McKinley Avenue, Columbus, Ohio.
• Work schedule may include on-call availability and participation in emergency response teams.
• Contract period from November 2, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
