Trades Generalist

Duties Description The Trades Generalist will be responsible for providing and completing technical and trade-specific maintenance, construction, and restoration services for DEC’s infrastructure and facilities. Must have a general knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades. Must be able to perform the specified job duties and skills according to work orders or verbal instructions by inspecting the work site to determine materials, equipment, tool requirements, and methods to be used; developing a plan or layout for the project or following a blueprint or schematic; assembling, fabricating, or building, and installing materials, equipment, or fixtures as required by the scope of work. May need to operate various types of equipment and possess a good working knowledge of all equipment being operated. May also be required to supervise subordinate staff and provide instructions on project priorities, work schedules, equipment needs, and health and safety issues. Must be willing and able to plan and lay out construction, maintenance, and repair projects to be completed by department staff and/or by contract. Procurement of supplies and materials from vendors under state contract, as well as utilizing preferred sources as needed. Obtain quotes for various projects and prepare purchase requisitions in accordance with department guidelines and policies. May also be responsible for administering and managing contracts with outside vendors. Track supplies, materials, and equipment to ensure proper use. Perform various administrative duties and ensure the accurate and timely submission of schedules, reports, and work orders. Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s licence appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Must have a valid driver’s licence or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after‑hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
