Job Description
ABOUT COMMONPOINT:
At Commonpoint, community is at the heart of everything we do. With more than 90 program sites and flagship locations in Little Neck, Bayside, Forest Hills, East Elmhurst, and Jamaica, we proudly serve over 125,000 individuals each year. From early childhood to older adulthood, we support people from all walks of life on their journeys from crisis to stability and empowerment. Our wide range of programs, spanning social services, education, and recreation, reflects our mission to build a more connected, inclusive, and thriving community for all.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
To continue advancing our impact across the communities we serve, Commonpoint is hiring an Emerging Leaders SYEP/WLG Coordinator within the Youth Employment Department. The department operates multiple programs serving primarily young people ages 14-24.
SYEP/WLG provides New York City youth with summer employment and educational experiences that build on their individual strengths and incorporate youth development principles, including engaging young people’s talents and interests, developing skills and competencies, and connecting participants with positive adult role models.
The Emerging Leaders SYEP/WLG Coordinator supports the successful implementation of the Emerging Leaders component of the Summer Youth Employment Program, with a focus on participant case management,
engagement, retention, intervention, and successful program completion.
Working closely with program leadership and staff, the Coordinator monitors participant progress, addresses barriers, coordinates interventions and follow-up, and supports worksite coordination, program documentation, data tracking, and compliance with Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) requirements.
The ideal candidate is organized, responsive, youth-centered, and skilled at supporting young people who may require additional assistance to remain engaged and succeed in the program. This position reports to the Emerging Leaders Associate Director.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Case Management, Intervention & Retention:
- Manage a caseload of Emerging Leaders participants, providing consistent support from enrollment through program completion and post-program follow-up.
- Conduct regular check-ins to monitor attendance, engagement, worksite performance, progress, and overall program experience.
- Identify participants at risk of disengagement, excessive absence, unsuccessful placement, or early exit and implement timely, individualized interventions.
- Help participants address barriers to participation and employment, including scheduling, workplace concerns, documentation, communication, and other challenges.
- Maintain consistent participant communication and promptly follow up on missed activities, shifts, appointments, workshops, or deadlines.
- Coordinate with worksite supervisors, program staff, and support services to resolve concerns, strengthen retention, and support successful completion.
- Document participant contacts, interventions, referrals, outcomes, and follow-up activities accurately and promptly, escalating high-risk concerns as appropriate.
- Support participants in developing workplace readiness, communication, problem-solving, self-advocacy, and professional skills.
Program Coordination & Compliance:
- Support program leadership in meeting DYCD contractual requirements and program goals by monitoring enrollment, attendance, participation, placement, retention, and completion.
- Ensure program activities, participant records, case notes, required documentation, and online submissions are accurate, complete, secure, and compliant with DYCD and agency requirements.
- Review participant records regularly, identify missing or outstanding requirements, and follow up to ensure timely resolution.
- Maintain and reconcile program data and trackers for participant status, attendance, placements, interventions, outcomes, and other key performance indicators.
- Identify trends or performance concerns requiring intervention and communicate findings to program leadership.
- Support program reporting, DYCD monitoring visits, audits, compliance reviews, and other data or documentation requests.
- Maintain participant confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with agency and contractual requirements.
Participant & Worksite Support:
- Communicate program requirements, deadlines, schedules, placements, and documentation needs to applicants and enrolled participants.
- Serve as a consistent point of contact for participants who need additional assistance navigating program or workplace expectations.
- Collect worksite information and match participants with appropriate opportunities based on their interests, skills, qualifications, and support needs.
- Maintain communication with participants and employers after placement to monitor attendance, performance, engagement, and placement success.
- Support conflict resolution, intervention, and reassignment when workplace challenges place a participant’s placement at risk.
- Gather participant and employer feedback to strengthen services and identify opportunities for program improvement.
Administrative & Team Support:
- Maintain organized confidential records, prepare program and meeting materials, draft routine correspondence, and manage assigned administrative workflows.
- Track deadlines, follow-up activities, and required documentation to ensure timely and accurate completion.
- Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, contractor meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
- Collaborate with program leadership, case management staff, worksite staff, and other team members to provide coordinated participant services.
- Support special projects and other responsibilities necessary for the successful implementation of SYEP Emerging Leaders.
QUALIFICATIONS & KEY ATTRIBUTES:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, education, psychology, counseling, youth development, public administration, or a related field preferred; relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience working with adolescents or young adults in workforce development, youth employment, case management, education, community-based, social-service, or program-support settings preferred.
- Experience providing case management, participant intervention, retention support, and follow-up is strongly preferred.
- Ability to build positive, professional relationships with young people while maintaining appropriate boundaries and accountability.
- Demonstrated ability to identify barriers, develop practical interventions, and follow cases consistently through resolution.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage a caseload and multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with youth, families, employers, colleagues, and community partners.
- Strong documentation and data-management skills, including the ability to maintain clear, timely case notes, participant records, trackers, and follow-up documentation.
- Detail-oriented and able to maintain accurate records in accordance with contractual and agency requirements.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive participant information with professionalism and discretion.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn database and participant-management systems.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
- Familiarity with DYCD-funded programs, SYEP, workforce development, or New = York City youth-serving programs is preferred.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
