About Us

Founded in 1852, GSC is a member of the University System of Georgia. The college has a distinctive legacy of excellent scholarship and service. GSC offers nearly 30 degrees, which includes multiple associate and baccalaureate pathways for students. With an enrollment of over 3,100 students, GSC offers an intimate academic setting with state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories. In this setting, students receive individualized attention that only a small college with dedicated faculty and staff can provide.


Job Summary

The Professional Tutor provides comprehensive academic support designed to improve student learning, persistence, academic confidence, and successful course completion. The position provides high-quality individual and group tutoring, proactive outreach to students who may benefit from additional support, coordinated care with faculty and campus partners, and workshops and activities that promote student success.


Responsibilities

Tutoring Services - 70%

• Provide individual and small-group tutoring in assigned academic areas, such as at the dorms and in the success center, through scheduled, walk-in, group, embedded, and virtual formats as appropriate.
• Help students understand course concepts, strengthen foundational skills, and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent-learning skills.
• Assist students with study strategies, test preparation, time management, academic organization, and other skills that support academic success.
• Collaborate with faculty to identify common areas of student difficulty and provide targeted academic support.
• Maintain accurate tutoring and participation records while upholding academic integrity and appropriate professional boundaries.

Student Outreach and Coordinated Care - 20%

• Conduct proactive outreach and follow-up with students identified through faculty referrals, advising, early alerts, or other student-success initiatives.
• Collaborate with faculty, advisors, and campus partners to identify student needs, address barriers, and coordinate appropriate support.
• Connect students with appropriate academic and campus resources and follow up as needed to encourage engagement.
• Document student contacts, referrals, outreach efforts, and follow-up activities in appropriate institutional systems.
• Promote tutoring and academic-support services through classroom visits, student communications, orientations, and campus events.

Workshops and Student-Success Activities - 10%

• Develop and facilitate workshops on study skills, time management, test preparation, note-taking, academic organization, and other student-success topics.
• Coordinate review sessions, study groups, and other targeted academic-support activities.
• Assist with orientation, student-success programming, and other campus engagement activities.
• Develop tutoring, workshop, and academic-success resources for students.
• Evaluate participation and effectiveness of workshops and activities to support continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university.


Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in tutoring, teaching, academic coaching, advising, or student support in a college or university setting.

Experience with early-alert, student-success, case-management, or coordinated-care systems.

Experience developing or facilitating academic-success workshops, group tutoring, or other student-support programming.

Demonstrated academic success in STEM areas such as Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Demonstrated proficiency in one or more academic areas appropriate for college-level tutoring.

Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to explain academic concepts clearly to students with varying levels of preparation.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, advisors, and other student-support professionals.

Demonstrated commitment to student learning, persistence, academic achievement, and student success.

Other Information

This is a part time, non-benefited position working up to 19 hours per week.

Pay range is $15.00 to $20.00 per hour.

Pay rate will be based on education and qualifications.
