USAISR Biological Science Laboratory Internship

Description The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a post‑bachelor's or master's internship at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command – Institute of Surgical Research (USAMRDC ISR). The internship focuses on large animal (swine) and small animal (rat) research in traumatic injury, hemorrhage, and thermogenesis. Research Areas Large animal (swine) models of traumatic injury, non‑compressible hemorrhage, antishock interventions, and tourniquet conversion. Small animal (rat) studies on PEG‑20K to reduce storage lesions in cold‑stored whole blood, endothelial glycocalyx preservation, and HIG complex stabilization. Nanotechnology reprogramming of adipocytes for enhanced thermogenesis as a potential therapy for cold trauma. Biomarker analysis using ELISA across animal models. Responsibilities Perform ELISA experiments, including sample preparation, reagent handling, and data interpretation. Collect, process, and store blood samples according to laboratory protocols. Maintain accurate laboratory records and sample logs. Assume routine equipment maintenance and calibration tasks. Manage laboratory inventory and uphold biosafety and safety practices. Location San Antonio, Texas Start Date & Appointment Length Appointees may begin immediately with exact dates determined at the time of selection. Appointments are initially one year, with the possibility of extension up to four additional years based on project needs and funding. Provisions Stipend ranging from $3,500.00 to $5,500.00 per month. Health insurance supplement (participants may purchase through ORISE). Relocation allowance. Training and travel allowance. Security Clearance Applicants will undergo a suitability/background investigation. Offers are contingent on favorable outcomes. Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry/materials science, cellular and molecular biology, immunology, genetics, or other eligible discipline. Degree awarded within five years of the appointment start date. U.S. citizen only. Preferred Skills Experience in a research or clinical laboratory setting. Experience with ELISA assays. Experience in blood sampling and handling biological samples. Eligibility Requirements Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only Degree: Bachelor's or Master's degree received within the last 60 months.
