Surgical technologists play a vital role within the surgical team, assisting in the delivery of surgical care to patients. They contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care that aligns with our mission of quality service and excellence. Responsibilities include:

• Supporting the surgical team under the guidance of a surgeon and other licensed clinical professionals.
• Ensuring a safe operating room environment and that all equipment is functioning correctly.
• Maintaining an organized sterile field and accurately tracking items used during procedures.
• Applying knowledge of asepsis and sterile techniques, human anatomy, and surgical procedures to assist in invasive therapeutic and diagnostic tasks.
• Preparing the surgical area by ensuring all supplies and devices are sterile and ready for use.
• Assisting in patient preparation prior to surgical procedures.
• Making minor adjustments to instruments to prevent malfunctions.
• Conducting quality assurance checks on sterile and unsterile supplies as per sterilization protocols.
• Participating in reconciliation activities post-surgery.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and critical thinking abilities, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and adapt to changing responsibilities with minimal notice. Additional administrative duties may be required for patient case preparation. LPN duties are included for those with an LPN license.

• Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or an approved practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is required.
• Experience in an operating room setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical and surgical terminology, instrumentation, aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures is essential, typically gained through post-secondary education.
• National certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
• If an LPN, must hold an unencumbered LPN license with the State Nursing Board or possess multi-state licensure privileges.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within the first 60 days of employment.
• Completion of annual continuing education units (CEUs) and competency training as mandated by the department and facility.
• If employed in North Dakota and not an LPN, must be registered on the North Dakota Board of Nursing Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Registry at the start of employment.
