Munchkinland Productions, LP, New York, NY, US Description Position Summary The Assistant Carpenter / Automation Technician is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and supervision of the production’s automation systems while supporting all carpentry department functions. This position plays a critical role in the daily load‑in, performance, and load‑out of Wicked on tour, ensuring that all automated scenic elements are operated safely and consistently in accordance with the production’s artistic and technical standards. The successful candidate will possess extensive touring experience, advanced knowledge of theatrical automation systems, strong theatrical carpentry skills, and a commitment to safety, leadership, and collaboration. Experience operating and maintaining PRG automation systems is required. Reports To: Head Carpenter Primary Responsibilities Operate the automation track using the PRG automation control system for performances, rehearsals, maintenance calls, and special events under the direction of the Head Carpenter and Production Stage Manager. Perform all required pre‑show, post‑show, and periodic safety inspections and system checks. Troubleshoot automation equipment and coordinate repairs as necessary. Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and operational records. Lead preventative maintenance and cleaning of all automation equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and production standards. Ensure the safe and consistent operation of all automated scenic elements throughout the run of the production. Support and assist other members of the carpentry department as needed. Load‑In and Load‑Out Supervise and direct local stagehands during load‑ins, performances, and load‑outs. Assemble and install overhead automation systems, including trusses, winches, rigging components, and associated equipment. Assemble and install deck automation systems, including deck tracks, winches, lifts, and scenic motion equipment. Manage automation cabling, power distribution, and control infrastructure. Coordinate with the Head Carpenter and other department heads to ensure automation supports the overall load‑in, load‑out, and run‑of‑show. Assist with general carpentry duties as required. Safety and Leadership Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to all company, manufacturer, and industry safety standards. Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, and accountability among touring and local crews. Train and mentor junior crew in the safe handling and operation of automation‑related equipment and scenery. Communicate effectively with stage management, production management, department heads, venue personnel, and local crews regarding automation operations and safety concerns. Qualifications Minimum five (5) years of experience on large‑scale theatrical touring productions. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining PRG automation systems. Strong knowledge of theatrical rigging, automation, scenic construction, and stage machinery. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control‑system issues in a live production environment. Experience leading and supervising local labor crews. Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills. Detail‑oriented, willing to complete both complex and menial repetitive tasks with exacting precision. Team player, able to work long hours in very close quarters with many different types of passionate personalities. Willing to work in an 8‑show a week schedule, with one day off a week. Often called in for rehearsals outside of the show schedule. Must be able to work around loud sounds and flashing lights. Willingness to work in dark, often cramped/closed spaces. Able to physically lift 75 pounds, comfortable lifting and walking backward, and comfortable walking up and down stairs. Ability to work safely at heights and in physically demanding environments. Valid passport and ability to travel throughout North America. Commitment to maintaining the artistic integrity and technical excellence of the production.
