Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) Seneca County, Region 3 Pay range: $59,425.00–$70,548.00 per year (base: $59,425 – $70,548). Salary based on skills and experience. Duties Description Diagnose and correct faulty vehicle and> Overhaul, adjust, and repair gas engines, clutches, transmissions, differentials, ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, hydraulic systems, steering, wheel, suspension, body, cab, and frame components. Conduct NYS inspections. Overhaul and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air, hydraulic), spreaders, small engines, mowers, track vehicles, loaders, cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators, and related equipment. Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti‑lock braking systems, and air conditioning. Perform cutting and welding as required. Make road calls, test drive equipment, complete reports, use parts catalogs, and perform related duties. Use department fleet management software and DOT electronic systems for repair, ordering, schedule management, and parts stock. Work overtime and, during Winter Maintenance Season, may be scheduled outside the day shift. Serve a role within the Incident Command System for regional and statewide emergency responses. Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for diagnosing faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and performing mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems. (Specify types of repair work and vehicles performed on your application.) OR successful completion of the New York State Department of Labor approved Diesel Engine Mechanic apprenticeship. OR an Associate’s degree in automotive or diesel repair technology. Substitution: Education may substitute for a maximum of two years of experience. Graduation from a technical or vocational program such as B.O.C.E.S in automotive or diesel technology may substitute for one year of experience. Graduation from a one‑year post‑high‑school certificate program may substitute for up to two years of experience. Experience limited to airplane (aviation) mechanic (except ground equipment); gas station attendant; repair of motorcycles, motor boats, or small engines; installation or repair of transmissions, mufflers, brakes, or tires; new car preparation; auto body repair work; or management activities as the owner or supervisor of a repair shop or service station is NOT QUALIFYING. Within one (1) year from appointment, candidates must obtain a valid NYS Inspection Certification issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction. All candidates must pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination and drug test prior to beginning employment. Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title; it will be tested during the pre‑employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification or removal from employment. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. Salary information reflects the full range for this graded position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations, and negotiated union contracts.
