Inspects, adjusts, installs adaptive equipment, wheelchair ramps, safety equipment, doors, windows, and performs repairs/renovations of buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment. Maintains and repairs hospital facilities, documents work orders, and communicates findings verbally and in writing. Operates motorized equipment as required and collaborates with other shops and employees as a team member. May perform additional tasks such as operating a motor vehicle, delivering supplies, and other incidental duties as assigned. May require alternate shift patterns or locations to meet agency needs. Note: This position may include participation in disaster response and/or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activations. Essential Job Functions (EJFs) Attend work regularly and follow shift schedules, with possible rotating or extended hours as allowed by policy. Inspect, maintain, and repair building systems across trades (plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting, electrical) following codes and standards. Use hand and power tools, equipment, and safety gear; document work and adhere to directions. Perform renovations to modernize buildings or adapt them to new uses; estimate time and locate necessary resources. Process and maintain records for work orders, projects, and material requisitions. Operate heavy machinery (e.g., backhoes, forklifts) as required. May train others on proper procedures and methods for repairs or inspections. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, sanitation, refrigeration, and electrical systems. Knowledge of industrial safety, fire, and safety regulations. Skill in preventive maintenance and inspections of buildings and systems. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment. Ability to follow instructions and interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches. Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing with the maintenance/facility team. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state license must provide an original certified driving record. Eligible driving record required per HHSC Fleet Management policy. Initial Screening Criteria One year of work experience in electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, grounds keeping, equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, or electronic cabling. Completion of trade school in any of the above may be substituted for experience. Additional Information Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE). Males 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years old; some locations may require 21.
