The Quality Technician performs advanced quality assurance functions to support manufacturing operations, new product launches, and customer requirements. This role focuses on precision inspection, PPAP support, ISO activities, advanced CMM and fixture inspection, and effective problem resolution. The Quality Technician leads problem‑solving efforts, drives advanced data collection, and takes ownership of quality performance for assigned product lines while collaborating closely with production teams and occasionally interacting with customers.
Responsibilities
- Perform advanced quality inspections on parts, assemblies, and fixtures using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, height gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
- Interpret engineering drawings, including weld symbols and GD&T, to verify dimensions, tolerances, and specifications.
- Conduct visual inspections and quality checks throughout the production process to ensure products meet internal and customer standards.
- Support PPAP submissions and customer approval activities by collecting, organizing, and validating required quality documentation and data.
- Operate coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to inspect complex parts, assemblies, or fixtures, when applicable.
- Participate in and often lead quality problem‑solving activities, using data and root cause analysis to identify issues and implement corrective actions.
- Support new product launches by establishing inspection methods, documenting quality requirements, and validating initial production runs.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing floor personnel, answering operator questions and providing guidance on inspection methods and quality standards.
- Perform advanced data collection and analysis on quality performance for assigned product lines and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
- Assist with ISO‑related activities, including maintaining documentation, supporting audits, and helping ensure ongoing compliance with quality system requirements.
- Maintain inspection equipment in good working condition and ensure calibration and proper use of precision tools.
- Document inspection results clearly and accurately, and escalate nonconformances according to established procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on enhancing product quality, reducing defects, and improving inspection processes.
Essential Skills
- 3–5 years of hands‑on inspection experience using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, height gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
- At least 3 years of print reading experience, including basic to mid‑complexity drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T, with the ability to accurately determine and calculate measurements and tolerances.
- Strong shop math proficiency, including metric and standard unit conversions, fractions to decimals, tolerance calculations, and basic trigonometry.
- High school diploma or equivalent combined with formal quality control training or substantial on‑the‑job quality experience.
- Manufacturing with direct exposure to production environments and quality inspection activities.
- Ability to successfully pass a setup and inspection test to demonstrate practical quality and measurement skills.
- Hands‑on experience working with manufacturing floor teams and answering operator questions related to quality and inspection.
- Proficiency in quality assurance, quality control, and quality inspection practices, including visual inspection and use of precision tools.
- Strong blueprint reading skills with emphasis on understanding weld symbols and GD&T.
- Ability to perform accurate measurements, record results, and follow established quality procedures consistently.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting PPAP submissions and customer approval processes.
- Experience operating CMM equipment for complex part, assembly, or fixture inspection.
- Familiarity with ISO requirements, audits, and certification processes.
- Prior involvement in new product launches, including establishing inspection plans and supporting initial production quality.
- Experience leading or actively participating in quality‑focused problem‑solving activities.
- Experience in product quality, including monitoring and improving quality performance metrics.
- Formal QC training through school, technical programs, or structured on‑the‑job training.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to inspection and documentation.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with production teams and supporting customer‑related quality activities.
