About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Pediatric Psychiatric Specialty: Psychiatric Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 7A-7P Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing required. Pediatric Behavioral Health experience preferred. License: State License Required. Certifications: BLS, MOAB obtained on site during orientation. Must-Have: De-escalation experience, experience with physical restraints, ability to conduct medication passes, and comfortability to run groups. Description: As an RN in the Pediatric Psychiatric Unit, you will be required to float between adult and pediatric patients as needed. The facility serves both voluntary and involuntary admissions. Pediatric patients range from ages 5 to 18 years old. Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria. Adult patients are typically 18 years and older. Common adult diagnoses include schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and anxiety. Patients come from an ED after being medically cleared. There are no forensic patients or inmates at this facility. Seclusion rooms are available as needed. Occasionally, you may encounter patients with substance use disorders or those detoxing, but they must be medically cleared. You will provide traditional medical and psychiatric care along with specialized therapies such as pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens. The patient-to-nurse ratio is as follows: During the day, the ratio is 1:5-6 for RNs and 1:6 for Psych Techs in pediatrics. At night, it is 1:13 for RNs with resource support and 1:2 for Psych Techs in pediatrics. Support on the unit includes a Nurse Supervisor available evenings and weekends, a Nurse Manager during the day, and a Nurse Practitioner on-site until 1600 and on-call overnight. Daily rounds are conducted by a psychiatrist. Psych Techs and a contracted phlebotomist also support the unit. Security is present but does not respond to patient escalations; staff from all units, including Psych Techs and Nurses, respond to such situations. Charting is done using the Cerner system and medication is managed via Pyxis. If you are not comfortable floating to pediatric units, please request manager approval. The holiday schedule requires working holidays in rotation. Weekend rotation will be every other weekend, and a modified self-scheduling system will be used for traveler shifts. You are encouraged to speak up if you need more practice with de-escalations. Scenario-based training is available every other week for additional practice as needed. A MOAB Educator and Trainer will be on-site.
