Position Summary This position is a full‑time position located in Lake County Community Planning & Development. The Building Permit Technician is the front‑line administrative and technical professional that serves as the primary bridge between the public, contractors, and the building department by processing building and ancillary permits and facilitating communication. General Duties and Responsibilities Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Essential Functions Application Intake Review incoming building, mechanical, plumbing, solar, and roofing permits to ensure all required forms and documents are complete and properly processed. Review incoming contractor registration, short‑term rental, and special event applications to ensure completeness and proper routing for technical review as applicable. Ability to actively participate in onboarding of new e‑permitting software. Excellent verbal communication. Website management. Strong organizational skills. Maintain and use software permit and license management system. Occasionally serve as recording secretary for the Board of Review (BOR), which involves coordinating and attending meetings, preparing minutes and agendas, and maintaining the BOR website information. Action plan record keeping for CPD weekly office meetings. Responsible for end‑of‑the‑month reports. Financial support by administratively processing accounts payable and receivables. Provide a high level of customer service. Efficiently interview customers to determine needs required. Adequately explain permit requirements and procedures. Prioritize and organize time effectively. Perform basic math quickly and accurately. Review construction and site plans for procedural completeness and general design adequacy. Software proficiency in MS Word and Outlook, with some knowledge of Excel and Teams. Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Typical Skills Creative problem solving. Effective and demonstrated writing techniques, oral communication and interpersonal skills. Application of ordinance, code, policy and regulation provisions. Ability to work on several projects simultaneously. Ability to work independently or on a team. Detail‑oriented. May be required to record minutes and follow up. Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish. Supervisory Responsibilities Not Applicable Requirements High school diploma or GED. 1–3 years of experience in municipal government, building construction, code compliance, or customer service. Preference given for candidates with an ICC Permit Technician certification. Ability to obtain ICC Permit Technician certificate within 12 months. Travel to conferences or events within and outside the State of Colorado. Proficiency preferred in English and Spanish. Hazard Notice Occasional construction and field site visits. Physical Activity & Work Environment Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Use of hands for repetitive motions such as typing, writing, or operating equipment. Operation of standard office equipment (computers, phones, copiers, etc.). Visual acuity to read and produce accurate documents and materials. Hearing ability sufficient to respond to spoken communication. Standard office environment with controlled temperature and lighting. Interaction with the public, sometimes in high‑pressure or emotionally charged situations. Occasional travel to offsite locations. Work in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven, or high‑volume environment. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
