Carpenter

Summary This position utilizes a thorough knowledge of carpentry trade methods and techniques; roofing methods, techniques, and practices; roof construction; cement work methods, techniques, and sequences; and construction, operation, installation, maintenance, repair and operating characteristics of locking devices and mechanisms, the position maintains, constructs, repairs, and alter wood surfaces, structures, and items; construct or repair cement or concrete surfaces, structures and items. Responsibilities Major duties of this position include but is not limited to: Utilizes and selects correct materials, tools and trade methods for repairs. Mills heavy lumber, cuts bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints. Evaluates problems and determines how or what repairs to make and the type and grade of wood or appropriate wood substitute materials. Sets up and adjusts stationary power equipment by checking and adjusting, for example, the "squareness" of the blade on a radial arm saw in relation to the surface of the cutting table. Performs preventive maintenance inspections to determine safety hazards, damage and repair requirements. Utilizes the common carpenter's rule/square in terms of measuring material to the nearest 1/32 of an inch. Utilizes and interprets equipment manuals, catalogs, sketches/drawings for gaining information to effectively assemble or repair equipment, doors, windows and hardware. Interprets and customizes systems furnishings using proper practices/instructions suggested by manufacturer's and trade standards. Interprets, creates and maintains work orders, purchase order requests and other shop records. Uses carpentry skills and techniques to remove, disassemble, repair, replace, install and maintain various building structural components to accomplish repairs, alterations, additions and occasional new construction. Installs systems furniture according to manufacturer's instructions to include panel hung furnishings, furnishing installed on wall standards modular systems furnishings. Operates a full range of industrial woodworking and related power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment. Uses carpentry skills and techniques to maintain building structural components without more than normal supervision. Installs systems furniture without more than normal supervision. Completes work assignments without more than normal supervision. Uses various kinds of coating materials such as solvents and pre- coating agents such as paint, varnish, epoxy, Teflon and paint remover. Uses various types and grades of wood or appropriate wood substitute materials. Uses various types of glues, epoxies, bonding agents and other materials required in a hospital setting. Plans, measures, and layout metal studs for walls. Plans, measures, and layout of suspended grid type ceilings. Plans, measures, and layout floor coverings. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/24/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Preferred experience have been identified for this position. 1. Must have experience as carpenter and assembly/installation of engineered furniture, ability to read and interpret drawings, locate studs behind drywall covered walls, be able to understand and follow instructions verbally or written/drawn. 2. Must be able to read a measuring tape, mark and cut metal or fabricated materials to length if called for in furniture drawings. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires light to moderately heavy physical effort (10-90 lbs) while lifting, transporting, carrying, pulling, moving, handling, or setting up ladders, scaffolding, materials, tools, and equipment. Work requires kneeling, crouching, stooping, bending, climbing, walking and standing for long periods. Works from atop buildings, ladders, scaffolds, platforms, ground level, or places requiring climbing ladders and scaffolds in overhead, stretched, cramped, awkward, tiring and or uncomfortable positions. Uses hand, eye, leg and body coordination while performing assigned task. Works indoors and outdoors subject to extremes of weather. Exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and concrete as well as sawdust when working with wood products. May be required to wear protective equipment or clothing; exposure to unusually dirty conditions that are damaging to clothing and footgear. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
