This position plays a critical role in supporting equipment assembly activities, parts procurement, inventory management, and laboratory organization. Position Summary The Mechanical Technician I will support engineering and machine build activities from initial procurement through final assembly. This hands-on role requires an individual who thrives in a technical shop and laboratory environment, takes ownership of assigned tasks, and can effectively manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, experience interpreting technical drawings, and the ability to support assembly and equipment activities in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities Procurement & Parts Management Obtain quotes from vendors for mechanical parts and components. Coordinate with purchasing teams to ensure purchase orders are issued accurately and on time. Track open purchase orders and communicate regularly with vendors regarding delivery schedules and specifications. Escalate delivery delays, quality concerns, or specification discrepancies as needed. Receive, inspect, and organize incoming materials and components while verifying accuracy against purchase orders and engineering drawings. Mechanical Assembly Gather and stage parts, hardware, and materials for machine builds. Assist with mechanical assembly of equipment and subassemblies following engineering drawings and documented procedures. Read and interpret mechanical and assembly drawings to ensure accurate assembly and part identification. Utilize common hand tools and assembly techniques to support equipment builds. Lab & Equipment Support Support organization and management of laboratory spaces, equipment, and tools. Assist with inventory management and maintenance of lab equipment. Maintain clean, organized, and efficient work areas. Support general shop and lab operations as needed. Documentation & Communication Maintain accurate records related to procurement activities, inventory, and assembly operations. Communicate effectively with vendors, purchasing teams, engineers, and internal stakeholders. Follow verbal and written instructions accurately and completely. Required Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED required. Technical certificate or Associate's Degree in a mechanical, manufacturing, or related discipline preferred. Equivalent experience (4+ years) may be considered in lieu of an Associate's Degree. Required Skills Ability to read and interpret mechanical and assembly drawings. Familiarity with mechanical hardware, fasteners, assembly tools, and standard assembly practices. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and take initiative. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable working in a hands-on shop, lab, and assembly environment. Proficiency with basic computer applications including email and spreadsheets. Preferred Qualifications Ability to read electrical schematics and perform basic low-voltage wiring. Experience creating mechanical part or assembly drawings using Autodesk Inventor or similar CAD software. Prior experience supporting vendor management, procurement, or supply chain activities. Experience supporting machine builds, research labs, or manufacturing operations. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Position is primarily onsite with occasional remote work opportunities (less than 10%). Work is performed in office, laboratory, shop, and assembly environments. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the workday. Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds as needed. Frequent use of hand tools and assembly equipment.
