What the Work Actually Looks Like Your responsibilities include owning the quality of every foot of pavement that leaves the machine: setting grade, verifying alignment, laying mat, and coordinating with the dump truck driver so material flow never stops. When the machine is not running, you perform ground work—raking, shoveling, rolling, and any other tasks needed. The season runs May through mid‑November, with 8–10 hour days, and every job is local; you return home each night without winter travel. What You Need 5+ years of verified asphalt paver operation in the seat, not just on the crew. CDL Class A or Class B with a clean driving record. Mechanical knowledge of paving equipment—understand what the machine is doing, not just how to run it. Ability to operate rollers, loaders, and skid steers. Physically capable of full‑day ground work when the machine isn’t running. U.S. work authorization. What You Don’t Need A highway or commercial‑only background; residential precision is valued.
