Transportation Manager

Manager, Transportation ensures a transportation department focused on people, safety, service, and cost. They lead a team of drivers and transportation associates to deliver safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Lead with a safety mindset, champion safety procedures and training to create and maintain a safety-first culture in the transportation department. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training on policy and procedures, and problem resolution. Ensure all associates are trained in job duties, safety, and legal responsibilities. Discuss performance with senior transportation managers, creating plans to address gaps, and review performance to coach on service and safety targets. Create an atmosphere of upward communication, motivate associates to achieve department goals, and build high‑performing teams through interviewing and hiring. Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates, drive engagement and retention, and embody US Foods values. Monitor production goals, maintain a zero‑error attitude for accuracy and customer satisfaction, and troubleshoot delivery problems, implementing cost‑effective and legal solutions while adhering to DOT regulations. Identify and eliminate waste, improve processes for safer and more efficient work. Conduct routine safety and driver meetings, investigate accidents, maintain accident files, and take preventive action. Maintain driver qualification files and schedule working shifts using planning tools such as Microsoft Excel. Other duties assigned by manager. Supervision Direct supervision of union and/or non‑union drivers. Relationships Internal – transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, internal customers across departments (e.g., sales). External – customers. Work Environment Significant time on the road in a truck, exposed to noise and vibration levels that may exceed typical passenger cars. Time spent in an office working on a computer. Minimum Qualifications Minimum of three years of experience in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution. Minimum of one year of experience overseeing a workforce. Experience as a driver is a plus. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures. Strong leadership, communication, and people development skills. Strong understanding of DOT requirements and familiarity with inventory control, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements. Ability to interpret financial and operational data. Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office). Travel 10% travel required, typically for mandatory meetings and/or training. Education and Training High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred. Physical Qualifications Stand – occasionally. Walk – occasionally. Drive vehicle – frequently. Sit – frequently. Other manual dexterity activities – occasionally. Compensation Base salary range: $60,000 – $90,000.
