Deputies serve communities in unincorporated King County, 13 contract city police departments, and transit police agencies. Recruitment and hiring will be administered in accordance with King County Civil Service Rules. Hiring Process STEP 1 – Test via Public Safety Testing: Pass the GSI Law Enforcement written exam and the physical ability test. STEP 2 – Apply via GovernmentJobs: Complete application, submit PHS and PST scores. STEP 3 – Oral Board Exam: Invitation for those meeting all requirements. STEP 4 – Background Investigation: Complete electronic statement of personal history, polygraph, medical and psychological exam. STEP 5 – Entry Deputy Eligible Register: Placement on register and subsequent vacancies filled per Civil Service Rules. Job Duties Patrol a designated area of the county and respond to calls of service. Interview victims, witnesses, secure and gather evidence. Complete administrative tasks such as incident and arrest reports. Investigate family disputes and reports of maltreatment of children. Respond to calls involving persons with social or behavioral problems. Serve as a community resource and participate in community activities. Testify in court and present facts and observations accurately and objectively. Basic Requirements United States citizen, Lawful Permanent Resident, or DACA recipient. Fluent in reading, speaking, and writing English. At least 20.5 years of age at time of application. Pass the GSI Law Enforcement Officer written exam with at least 70% and the physical test within 30 days of applying. High school degree or GED. Do not meet any automatic disqualifying behavior requirements. Meet all KCSO background standards as listed in section 10.14 of the Civil Service Rules. Skills & Abilities Clear verbal communication. Respectful relationship with diverse communities. Work with vulnerable populations including those with chemical dependency and behavioral health challenges. Conflict management and teamwork. Represent the Sheriff's Office with effective interpersonal relations. Map following and familiarization with assigned patrol area. Physical fitness and stress management.
