GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES This is routine work requiring the inspection of conditions of authorized residential and commercial property for compliance with local laws, codes and ordinances. Additionally, the work consists of routine tasks related to receiving complaints, issuing summons and following up on violations. Work is performed under the direction of the Code Compliance Supervisor or designee. Does related work as required. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only): Completes study and reading assignments related to learning local and state laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and requirements. Receives verbal and written complaints regarding non-construction violations. Assists and performs field inspections for violations of local code and zoning ordinances to investigate complaints and to verify follow-up compliance. Explains the requirements of and methods for compliance with local codes and zoning ordinances to residents and general public. Issues appearance tickets for non-compliance; Assists and prepares cases for prosecution for non-compliance and testifies in court proceedings Maintains records and produces reports as necessary. Performs fledInspects interiors of buildings and homes for code compliance and permitted work according to an assigned schedule. Prepares reports and records on all inspections within a reasonable period of time after inspection. Performs data entry related to work in City databases and software programs. Assists property owners with questions and concerns relating to permits, violations, and general compliance with Building Code and related City ordinances. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the City's housing and building codes; Good knowledge of office terminology and procedures; Ability to use computer software for word processing and data managing; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to deal effectively with the public with tact and courtesy; Confidentiality; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and; Possession of a New York State Certification as Building Safety Inspector by completing training requirements and completion of Courses 9A, 9B, and 9C, within one year of appointment and throughout tenure. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid NYS Driver's License at time of appointment and throughout tenure. Position may require ability to work Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
