Principal Mechanical Engineer

The Shipboard Effectors Department is searching for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to support Standard Missile and Patriot products and subsystems in Huntsville, Alabama. Responsibilities Contribute to contract‑funded and independent research efforts at various development phases. Communicate with cross‑disciplinary engineering team members and suppliers to analyze, model, and document the design technical data package (TDP) and its compliance with requirements. Work independently as the responsible engineer, often in a project‑management role over entire subsystems. Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, sub‑assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements. Collaborate across multiple disciplines, including Structural and Thermal analysis, Materials Engineering, Quality, Safety, and Supply Chain. Lead a team with limited supervision and meet commitments for schedule, financial, and technical goals. Support suppliers with product integration. Apply Thermal, Structural, Dynamic, and Reliability analysis to provide inputs and support for design. Perform and review tolerance analyses to ensure form, fit, and function meet design intent. Improve new and existing designs using Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) and Design for Producibility principles. Apply knowledge and experience in technical problem solving and hardware development in a fast‑paced, team environment. Qualifications Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience. Experience with CREO (or equivalent CAD tool). Experience developing and executing a plan to develop a mechanical component or subsystem. Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), basic tolerance analyses, and drawing practices for mechanical hardware. Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required. Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (modeling and drawing) and Windchill (PDM). Willingness to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities. Preferred Qualifications Four years of professional experience related to mechanical design and documentation in the aerospace & defense industry. Advanced degree in an engineering discipline. Experience in mechanical sub‑systems packaging, materials, thermal, structural analysis, energetics principals, control systems, interconnect, airframe, or large assembly development. Willingness to support tasks as experience allows relative to both design development and production support. Benefits & Salary Salary range: $107,500 – $204,500 USD.
