Position Overview:

The Asphalt Superintendent (AS) is responsible for overseeing the completion and construction of Asphalt jobs and crews onsite.  The AS works directly with the Project Manager and Customer to organize jobs, maintain timelines and budgets, manage field personnel, ensure employee safety, and deliver a first-class product to make the customer happy.

Primary Duties:

• Be on the job at the assigned start time.
• Communicate with your crew and ensure they know where the job is and what time to be there.
• Manage your crew. Provide clear direction to each person and establish production goals consistent with the project budget.
• Prior to the start of the project, review the project “dump folder’ with the PM and know the scope, amount of materials, time and equipment necessary to complete each job.
• Conduct 10/10 meetings with your staff each morning.
• Conduct weekly safety meetings (Toolbox Talks) with your crew, have your crew sign the safety attendance record, and turn the record into HR when completed.
• Ensure your crew employees are following OSHA regulations and all company policies regarding safety, including hardhats, safety vests or shirts, protective eyewear, footwear, and the Company policy with regards to appearance. Monitor your crew for illness especially in high heat weather.
• Follow company policies in the event of an accident. In the event of an injury, call 911. Make sure you have a complete first aid kit in your vehicle.
• Enforce company polices with regards to the Drug Free Workplace.
• Get with your PM and discuss a 2-5 day “look ahead” schedule. Make sure you obtain a dump folder for each job.
• Review employee’s timesheets and approve each employees times and work hours.
• Report any violations of the employee handbook to the HR director immediately.
• Report tardy or absent employees to the HR director immediately.
• Handle personnel and other complaints from your crew. If you cannot handle or solve the issue, advise your PM and the HR director.
• Work with PM in advance on scheduling trucks, equipment and materials needed for jobs.
• Upon arriving to the job, verify pavement areas, check for grade, proper drainage, and potential subgrade failure issues.
• Protect surrounding structures from damage – curbs, catch basins, concrete work, aprons, buildings, bollards, landscaped beds, etc.
• Have all necessary materials and supplies on the crew truck prior to starting a job. Inform the PM of any supplies needed and ensure there is a proper supply of common supplies in the shop at all times.
• Ensure the project is on time and budget; communicate with PM if budget cannot be met.
• Make sure all equipment is greased, fueled and fluids checked daily. Contact Mechanic immediately with any issues.
• Manage trucking on your project. Sign out broker trucks, report broker trucks for being late or stepping out of line, delays, poor service, incompetent drivers, damage to our equipment etc.… Sign broker time tickets daily (sign out).
• Communicate with the asphalt plant personnel on when to load trucks, how much mix you need left, start and end time, when to load trucks etc.… Make sure you advise the plant EARLY if you are going to run late and insist the plant stays open.
• Communicate with PM when the asphalt mix is not up to spec or is of poor quality. Send mix back to the plant if not acceptable.
• Advise PM throughout the day on project progress.
• Advise PM of any materials you need.
• Make sure your job is cleaned up daily. All construction debris is cleaned up, tools placed back in the truck, areas roped off or secured, signage in place, equipment parked in a neat row and secured.
• Coordinate equipment moves with PM
• Make sure equipment is greased daily, maintains proper levels of fuel, hydraulic fluid, and engine oil.
• Communicate rain days with the PM and all field employees. In the event of rain, advise the crew on start time, visit job, and discuss with PM on starting or stopping a project. Communicate with plant decisions.
• Communicate equipment repairs, including trucks with the PM and Shop Foremen daily.
• Attend Superintendent meetings.
• Deliver first-class customer service to employees and customers.
