Physician Assistant (Emergency)

Summary

Serves as Lead Advanced Practice Provider, Emergency Medicine Service, with primary responsibility for administrative, programmatic, and clinical leadership delivery of emergency care at the Fayetteville VAMC ED. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Chief of Emergency Medicine Service for all clinical, administrative, and quality performance matters.

Duties

Help

a. Administrative Responsibilities (40%)

1. Responsible for hands on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of the advanced practitioner emergency provider services, including research programs and guidance and training for medical residents and other trainees.

2. Directly accountable to the Emergency Department Deputy Chief for day-to-day administrative and clinical activities of the service and overall compliance to VISN wide policies and procedures.

3. Acts as a key liaison between Emergency Room staff and hospital administration, ensuring seamless emergency department operations.

4. Provides mentorship and leadership to staff within the service, ensuring that they have access to continued education, career advancement, and leadership opportunities.

5. Develops policies and procedures that enhance the utilization and integration of staff in emergency medicine workflows.

6. Advocates for optimal staffing models, ensuring adequate coverage, work-life balance, and equitable shift distribution for staff.

7. Assists with performance reviews, professional development planning, and pay-for performance assessments of staff in the department.

8. Plays an active role in provider recruitment and retention of staff, ensuring that highly skilled, committed providers are brought into and retained within the department.

b. Clinical Responsibilities (60%)

1. Provides high-level, autonomous patient-centered care to all individuals presenting to the Emergency Department, ensuring rapid evaluation and management of undifferentiated acute conditions.

2. Functions at the top of the PA scope, practicing under established VA and facility policies while maintaining close collaboration with attending emergency physicians if or when needed.

3. Demonstrates advanced procedural competencies in emergency medicine, including but not limited to:

a) Airway management (including endotracheal intubation and advanced airway adjuncts).

b) Vascular access (central and arterial lines, ultrasound guided IV placement).

c) Trauma and orthopedic procedures (reductions, splinting, and joint aspirations).

d) Point-of-care ultrasound (FAST exam, cardiac ultrasound, procedural guidance).

e) Wound care (complex laceration repairs, abscess drainage). f) Provides high-quality, patient-centered care to all individuals presenting to the Emergency Department.

c. Academic/Teaching/Training. Will participate in the education of residents, fellows, and students, when applicable and needed.

Performs other assigned duties.

Work Schedule: 24/7 shift work scheduling which encompasses proportional day, evening, night shifts and holidays as dictated by the published accepted emergency department operating procedures.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements

• Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
• Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
• Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: Emergency Department Experience Preferred

Grade Determinations : Physician Assistant-IV (PA-IV)

Positions may include but are not limited to: Facility or Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) Lead PA, Facility PA Education Lead, PA Residency Program Director, or other Clinical and/or Administrative leadership assignments.

PA (Clinical Leader/Administrative Leader). PAs at the PA-IV grade level may serve as clinical leader or administrative leader. Clinical PA Leaders may be assigned to positions/studies where limited guidance exists as physician oversight is not required. Administrative PA Leaders are involved with strategic planning and administrative/managerial responsibilities for integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care. A PA clinical leader/administrative leader may monitor or evaluate services or programs with interaction of senior administration.

i. Experience. PA clinical leaders/administrative leaders require five years of experience which included leadership assignments that involved formulating program objectives and priorities, implementing plans and practices, and interpreting regulatory and organizational guidance to develop and implement policies and/or procedures.

ii. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. PAs at this level are not required to meet each individual KSA listed below to qualify, but should be able to demonstrate, develop, or acquire those not met upon appointment for PA-IV:

a. Ability to assess information and make recommendations that may significantly affect the content, interpretation, or development of programs concerning critical matters or key issues within the health care system.

b. Ability to schedule and supervise staff, students, or ancillary personnel, to include conducting performance evaluations.

c. Skill in planning, organizing, directing, and controlling an integrated program.

d. Skill in design, management of budget, and cost benefit analysis to ensure optimal stewardship of resources.

e. Ability to analyze complex medical care, organizational processes and/or systems, and develop and implement solutions that improve outcomes at the program or service level.

f. Ability to develop and recommend new or revised policies or procedures to justify program goals and motivate assigned personnel.
