Position Title Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (COVID‑19 and flu vaccine mandatory) Job Summary The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor supports and provides breastfeeding education to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding women, and assists the Lactation Promotion Supervisor as requested. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Complete core breastfeeding peer counselor trainings and state and local orientations. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide lactation care and support appropriate to client needs. Provide education on basic breastfeeding principles, techniques, and strategies. Ensure availability to clients by phone, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Maintain timely contact and follow‑up for a caseload of referred pregnant and breastfeeding clients. Maintain complete and up‑to‑date peer counselor notes. Recognize when client issues are beyond the peer scope of practice and refer to appropriate WIC or other professional personnel. Attend mandatory meetings and participate in required continuing education activities. Assist with breastfeeding promotion and community breastfeeding education as needed. Assure timely, friendly and effective quality of services throughout client interactions. Qualifications High School diploma or GED (required). Previous or current breastfeeding experience with at least one baby for the last 6 months. Previous or current WIC participant (preferred). Basic computer experience and writing skills sufficient to communicate with dietitians, WIC clerks, nutrition assistants, the WIC coordinator, lactation promotion supervisor, and WIC participants. Bilingual, bicultural – English/Spanish preferred. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure (basic mathematics). Ability to understand a variety of written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule instructions (reasoning ability). Commitment to maintain CPR certification bi‑annually. Must have a TB test and receive a flu shot annually unless exempted (public health requirement). Conditions of Employment Sign a permanent confidentiality oath covering all patient‑related information. Pass a background check by the Washington State Patrol. Additional Requirements Pre‑hire and annual employee health screening. Annual influenza vaccine required; employees with medical or religious exemptions must wear a mask during flu season. Physical and Work Environment Work involves frequent use of telephone/cell phone, extended computer use, and occasional on‑site presence. Employees may work from home for a portion of regular hours and may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet client needs. Typical noise levels are moderate to moderately high. Physical demands include: using hands and fingers, handling or feeling items, reaching with hands and arms, speaking and hearing, and the ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods. Compensation and Benefits Hourly position – $21.30 per hour.
