Chief of Staff
$170kCOMMISSION ON RACIAL EQUITY
Position Title: Chief of Staff The Agency You'll Join: In November 2022, New York City voters overwhelmingly approved three ballot proposals that put racial equity and justice at the heart of city government, including the NYC Commission on Racial Equity (NYC CORE). The first of its kind in the nation, the NYC Commission on Racial Equity is an independent 15-member commission responsible for engaging diverse communities to guide and assess the City’s racial equity planning process. NYC CORE provides accountability for New Yorkers, regularly evaluating the City’s progress on its racial requirements and goals. NYC CORE will be composed of diverse New Yorkers with equity expertise and/or relevant lived experience, serving as a conduit to bring historically excluded communities and voices into government decision-making. The Team You'll Work With: NYC CORE is an independent commission to hold the NYC government accountable to advance racial equity in government operations and to increase community voice in government decision-making. The Chair & Executive Director is jointly appointed by the Mayor and the New York City Council Speaker. Other NYC CORE commissioners are appointed by the Mayor, City Council Speaker, City Comptroller, and Public Advocate. The Commission's staff is responsible for executing the Commission's day-to-day mission and setting its path to success. NYC CORE team takes the vision of the Chair & Executive Director and the Commissioners and translates it into action strategies and plans that implement accountability for racial equity in the city. Like the Commission itself, the Commission’s staff aims to be representative of New Yorkers from all communities and walks of life. Staff bring an accountability mindset to their work, ensuring they collaborate with city agencies and voice public concerns. The Problems You'll Solve NYC CORE seeks a dynamic, motivated, detail-oriented and accomplished individual to serve as Chief of Staff. This position is an integral member of the NYC CORE Commission, serves as the primary advisor to the Chair and Commissioners on agency matters, and will focus on making improvements and efficiencies across the agency, enabling staff to work smarter, ultimately delivering better results to NYC CORE government and community partners. Reporting to the Chair and Executive Director, with the widest latitude for independent initiative, judgment and action, the Chief of Staff will provide strategic and operational guidance, coordinate intra-agency projects, and be responsible for the administration, management, and oversight of all staff functions to support NYC CORE’s continuum of programs. The Chief of Staff will co-manage all Directors and Senior Directors. As the Chief of Staff, you will have the following duties: Serve as a strategic partner and principal advisor to the Chair and Executive Director and NYC CORE Commissioners. Draft and review memos, briefing materials, presentations, reports, and other executive-level documents. Prepare agendas and materials for the Chair and Executive Director internal and external meetings and tracking follow-up actions to ensure timely execution. Manage information flow between the Chair and Executive Director office and internal and external partners to eliminate bottlenecks. Work with directors to improve the standardization of workplace policies, and processes to improve workplace culture that strengthens communication among agency staff and coordinating intra-agency meetings when necessary. Provide troubleshooting assistance to the Chair and Executive Director on a variety of fronts, including taking responsibility for identifying, triaging, and coordinating responses to issues brought to the Chair and Executive Director’s attention. Serve as liaison to agency staff, other government entities and the public and guides the Chair and Commissioners in decisions affecting major policy and procedural changes related to issues involving public controversy and legislative sensitivity. Reduce delays in operational bottlenecks and increase organizational effectiveness and project management practices. Work directly with the Chair and leadership team to properly attend to the overall administration of the agency, including but not limited to legislative affairs, public and intergovernmental matters, press and communication, strategic initiatives and EEO issues. Build and maintain systems, processes, and tracking tools that improve coordination, accountability, and long-term operational capacity across the office and its growing portfolio of work. Create an effective and collaborative work environment that supports innovation and excellence while centering community voice. Embed DEI and racial equity practices and tools into the everyday functioning of the Commission. Other duties as assigned. About You Commitment to racial equity and seeking a values-aligned role that involves significant creativity and challenge. You are comfortable moving between big-picture planning and hands-on execution, whether that means helping shape long-term leadership initiatives, preparing for sensitive conversations and decisions, managing follow-through on key priorities, or jumping in on smaller day-to-day tasks as needed in a fast-moving environment.
