Position Overview
\nThe Chief of Surgery provides clinical, administrative, and strategic leadership for the surgical department. The roles oversees surgeons and surgical staff, develops policies and procedures, ensures patient safety, and works with hospital leadership to improve surgical outcomes and operational efficiency.

- \n
- Lead and supervise the surgical department and its medical staff \n
- Develop and implement departmental goals, policies, and quality improvement initiatives \n
- Ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality surgical care \n
- Monitor surgical outcomes and address quality and patient safety concerns \n
- Recruit, mentor, evaluate, and retain surgeons and surgical personnel \n
- Collaborate with hospital executives and other department leaders on strategic planning \n
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, healthcare regulations, and hospital policies \n
- Oversee departmental budgeting, staffing, and financial performance \n
- Promote research, innovation, and continuing medical education within the department \n
- Resolve clinical and administrative issues related to surgical services \n
- Represent the department in hospital committees and community outreach activities \n
- Work collaborative with the other Department or Service Line Chiefs to attain the stated yearly goals and objectives of Central Maine Healthcare \n
- Promote and sustain an effective working environment among the physicians, nurses and other staff within the clinics and the hospital \n
- Provide ongoing education to the department or service line regarding administrative, regulatory, and legal issues arising from a changing healthcare environment \n
- Working with the nursing and administrative leadership, ensure high reliability in the transitions of care among disciplines or sites of service of care \n

Required:
\n- \n
- An M.D. or D.O. degree \n
- Active membership and unrestricted privileges on the medical staff \n
- Active unrestricted Maine Medical License \n
- Active Board Certification \n
- Demonstrated excellence in clinical, medical staff citizenship (i.e. medical record completion, ability to work within the complex team structure of healthcare, patient satisfaction) and patient safety \n
- Willingness and ability to attend continuing education related to the business of medicine \n
Preferred:

- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written \n
- Ability to work in a matrix and dyad structures \n
- Basic financial skills (operational and capital budgets, variance analysis), or ability to acquire these skills \n
- Effective coaching ability \n
- Basic understanding of the complex healthcare environment and delivery of patient care \n
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing \n
- Strong written and verbal skills \n
- Additional languages preferred \n
- Basic computer knowledge \n
