HIM Specialist

Location: Birmingham, AL

Schedule: Monday-Friday | 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (Flexible start time between 6:00 AM - 8:00 AM)

Work Environment: Onsite

Duration: 6-Month Contract

We are seeking a detail-oriented HIM Sr. Specialist to support Health Information Management (HIM) operations within a healthcare environment. This role is responsible for document imaging, medical record analysis, data integrity activities, and record management functions to ensure patient records are complete, accurate, secure, and accessible.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with medical records, electronic health record systems, high-volume data entry, and healthcare documentation processes. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are essential for success in this position.

• Prepare paper medical records for scanning by organizing documents, removing staples, and ensuring records are properly formatted.
• Scan and upload medical records into document management systems and electronic medical record (EMR) platforms.
• Perform quality review, validation, and indexing of scanned records to ensure accuracy.
• Analyze medical records for completeness and identify missing documentation.
• Assign and reassign provider deficiencies in accordance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies.
• Support provider queries and missing documentation workflows.
• Complete birth and/or death certificate documentation in compliance with state regulations.
• Perform chart pickup, reconciliation, record retrieval, and filing activities.
• Assist with data integrity functions including chart corrections and duplicate medical record resolution.
• Process continuity of care requests and support medical record requests from internal departments and external agencies.
• Answer phones and provide excellent customer service regarding health information inquiries.
• Maintain productivity and quality metrics while adhering to department standards.
• Ensure compliance with all privacy, confidentiality, and security requirements regarding patient information.

• Experience with healthcare document management, medical records, or health information management functions.
• Strong data entry and computer skills.
• Experience using EMR systems and document management applications.
• Knowledge of document imaging processes, including scanning, indexing, quality review, and validation.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
• Ability to prioritize workload and manage deadlines effectively.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Understanding of patient privacy, security, and confidentiality standards.

• Experience working with EPIC or similar EMR systems.
• Previous experience within a hospital Health Information Management department.
• RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) certification.
• RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) certification.
• Experience with VitalChart ChartFlow or similar document management software.
• Knowledge of birth and death certificate processing.
• Experience supporting chart deficiencies, provider queries, and data integrity initiatives.

• Highly organized and detail-oriented.
• Comfortable working with large volumes of medical documentation.
• Able to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Demonstrates professionalism and a commitment to protecting confidential patient information.

This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
