DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY & OPERATIONS

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Development Strategy and Operations manages the strategic and operational infrastructure supporting the organization's fundraising efforts, combining donor research, reporting, analysis, and strategic partnership with development leaders. 

Key responsibilities include producing donor bios for leadership and events; conducting prospect research using Donor Search, Salesforce, and public records; and partnering with Philanthropy Officers on quarterly and annual portfolio strategy. This role serves as the liaison with the IT team on development software needs and produces various monthly development reports. The Director serves on the Development Leadership team and reports to the Executive Director of Development. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

• Donor Intelligence & Prospect Research

• Produce compelling donor biographies and profiles for leadership engagement, events, and key donor visits. 

• Conduct prospect research using DonorSearch, internal CRM, public records, and other relevant sources to identify and evaluate prospective donors and current donors with potential for increased philanthropic investment. 

• Provide timely donor intelligence to support cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.

• Portfolio Strategy & Fundraising Support

• Partner with Annual Giving, Mid-Level Giving, and Major Giving teams on quarterly and annual portfolio reviews. 

• Support portfolio strategy and pipeline health by identifying opportunities, trends, gaps, and actionable insights from donor data. 

• Provide reporting and analysis to help fundraising leaders make informed portfolio and engagement decisions.

• Reporting, Analytics & Dashboards

• Produce monthly KPI reports and oversee development dashboards, ensuring data is accurate, relevant, and actionable. 

• Provide donor reports, including the Weekly Top Donor Report and customized reports for leadership and OMC/Foundation stakeholders. 

• Own and manage development reporting requests from intake through completion. 

• Identify opportunities to improve reporting processes, data visibility, and performance measurement.

• Development Systems & Salesforce Partnership

• Liaise with the Salesforce team regarding development software needs, enhancements, troubleshooting, and process improvements. 

• Translate Development team requirements into clear system and reporting needs. 

• Help ensure development systems support effective fundraising operations and accurate data management.

• Strategic Planning

• Lead the Development OKR process, including strategic guidance, coordination, documentation, tracking, and reporting. 

• Support Development leadership in establishing measurable objectives, monitoring progress, and documenting outcomes. 

• Identify trends and opportunities that inform strategic priorities and team performance.

• Development Administration & Operations

• Provide guidance for Development administrative responsibilities and processes. 

• Establish and improve processes that promote efficiency, accountability, and strong internal service across the Development team.

• Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Liaise with GIK/Compassion teams to support use of best practices in donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, while ensuring regular communication and mutual support between departments. 

• Serve as a member of the Development Leadership Team and contribute to department-wide strategy, planning, and decision-making. 

• Build strong working relationships across Development and with organizational partners to advance fundraising goals.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered. 

• 5 or more years experience in fundraising, donor relations, community relations, research, analysis, business development, administrative leadership or a related field. 

• Demonstrated success cultivating and maintaining relationships with donors, community leaders, churches, businesses, or other strategic partners. 

• Strong interpersonal, verbal, written, presentation, and relationship-building skills. 

• Experience using a donor database/CRM such as Salesforce, Raiser's Edge, Bloomerang, or a comparable system. 

• Strong technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and general comfort learning and troubleshooting new software platforms 

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple relationships, priorities, and deadlines. 

• Ability and willingness to travel. 

• Ability to work collaboratively across teams and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• CFRE certification or demonstrated progress toward professional fundraising credentials 

• Demonstrated ability to make compelling philanthropic asks and develop relationships through the full donor cycle. 

• Experience supervising staff preferred

Able to learn and adapt to emerging technologies and systems. 

• Fundraising Acumen: Demonstrates a strong understanding of fundraising principles, including donor behavior, the donor lifecycle, segmentation, moves management, major and transformational giving, portfolio strategy, and relationship-centered fundraising. 

• Communication & Collaboration: Communicates complex information, insights, and recommendations clearly and compellingly to diverse audiences; builds credibility and effective working relationships; and collaborates across departments and with organizational leadership to translate strategy into action.

This job requires the ability to work in stressful conditions from time to time and remain focused for extended periods of time. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds (boxes, documents, and/or equipment) may be required on occasion.
