Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Performs Nuclear Medicine procedures at a level of competence not requiring constant supervision to technical detail. Assumes responsibility for designated areas, radiation safety, procedures and students as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

• Ability to read and communicate in the English language.
• Able to function independently with only minimal supervision from Radiologists or other Nuclear Medicine Team members. Makes pertinent observations regarding patient's condition, anatomy, and abnormalities.
• Must possess considerable knowledge of human anatomy and must be able to make reliable judgment on areas of concentration.
• Subject to frequent procedure changes.
• Assist with student instruction.
• Competent with organization of workflow in order to establish priorities.
• Understand basic technical aspect of procedures and equipment.
• Able to handle stress of interruption while still making accurate decisions.
• Able to interpret patient clinical data in order to present concise medical history to Radiologist.
• Functions as a receptionist, technologist and secretary simultaneously.

Contact with Others:

• Close patient contact during long procedures (up to 60 mins/procedure).
• Constant contact with Nuclear Medicine Technologists to discuss and coordinate related procedures.
• Frequent contact with Radiologists and physicians to discuss procedure protocols and case histories.
• Frequent contact with nursing personnel for purposes of patient preparation and scheduling.
• Frequent contact with physicians and their offices for purposes of patient scheduling and obtaining patient history.
• Frequent explanation of procedures to family and visitors.

Additional Information:

• Special procedures and requirements. Must have 2 years of Nuc Med experience. Types of scans: bone, billiary, thyroids, cardiac, lung scans, WBC, and renal/kidney.
• Types of equipment. 3 Phillips cameras: Vertex, Forte, and Skylight. I Client camera; Starcam. All Nuclear Medicine Equipment and Accessories, PACS Hardware – dept is film free, and physicians can review remotely. Utilize a Nuclear Medicine Management System.
• Additional skills and abilities. Must have good people skills and be extremely flexible.
• Licensure and Certification requirements. Graduation from an approved school of Nuclear Medicine Technology. Must be ARRT or CNMT certified. Must obtain license from the Maryland Board of Physician Quality Assurance to practice Nuclear Medicine Technology in the state of Maryland. Registered or Registry Eligible candidates only.
• Call, special schedule or floating requirements. Shifts: 4 – 10 hour shifts Monday through Friday, starting at 6:30 am till close at 4 pm. No call required.
• Information about the department. Average 30 patients/day through 4 cameras covering 3 rooms in the diagnostic area and 1 room upstairs near the cath lab for cardiac patients. Each test takes an average 30 minutes to 1 hr and 30 minutes. Dress code: Navy and White scrubs or business casual attire with a lab coat.
