Nature of Position: The job of Custodian (Day or Night) was established for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events; performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance; and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

• Arranges furnishings and equipment to provide adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
• Cleans school facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, lunch rooms, halls, carpets, removes graffiti, windows, walls, gyms, bleachers, stage, locker rooms, sidewalks, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment at the school.
• Completes employer-required training to maintain current knowledge regarding specific job and/or diocesan, state, and federal rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and laws.
• Distributes supplies, equipment, and/or mail (e.g., fill soap dispensers, towel/toilet paper dispensers, packages, furniture, TV/VCR carts, etc.) to appropriate parties and/or locations.
• Executes minor repairs (e.g., assembles furniture, changes ballast, plumbing, locks, windows, ceiling tiles, filters, etc.) to ensure that items are available and in safe working condition.
• Informs students, staff, and visitors about activities, safety, and/or proper maintenance of facilities.
• Inspects school facilities to ensure that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and to identify and report necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
• Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) to ensure the availability of items required to properly stock facilities.
• Prepares facility for daily operations (depending on shift) (e.g., closing gates, stowing flags, locking doors, removing snow, crossing signs, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
• Assists others with scheduling the facilities and provides assistance and information to those requesting the use of the facilities.
• Helps respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms, etc.) and takes appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintain a functioning physical and educational environment.
• Secures facilities and grounds (depending on shift) (e.g., lock doors, turn off lights, set alarm, etc.) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability to the school.
• Attends in-service training (e.g., instruction on blood-borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) to receive information on new and/or improved procedures.
• Services job-related machinery/equipment (e.g., adjusting, cleaning, and oiling vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, etc.) to maintain equipment in good working condition. Also changes brushes, pads, rollers, etc. on equipment.
• Assists other personnel to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
• Works under direct supervision using standardized routines. Provides information and/or advises others and operates within a defined budget. Utilizes some resources from other work units as required to perform the job's functions.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks, with a potential need to upgrade them to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include: operating equipment used in industrial maintenance, including electrical cleaning equipment, common tools, etc., and adhering to safety practices.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include: methods of industrial cleaning and safety practices and procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and consider several factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals, work with similar types of data, and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Some problem-solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem-solving with data may require independent interpretation, and problem-solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; and working as part of a team. Physical Requirements:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting up to 30 pounds unassisted to lift equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks, occasionally may need to lift up to 75lbs, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing using ladders and/or scaffolding for cleaning, changing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, etc.; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 90% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Other Requirements:

Job-related experience is desired. A high school diploma or GED is desired. Valid PA Driver's License required and Evidence of Insurability. Have or be willing to obtain a CPR/First Aid Certificate and Bloodborne Pathogen Training. Be willing to respect the Catholic Church and follow our basic morality guidelines.
