Class A CDL Line Haul Mileage Driver

Job Summary Line Haul Drivers operate various tractor‑trailer combinations over long distances between customer service centers and customer facilities or work sites outside of the service center’s geographic area. They sort, handle, load, and/or unload freight at company and customer locations. Primary Responsibilities Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations that govern safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials. Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and satisfactorily pass a drug test and alcohol test. Perform pre‑trip inspections of vehicles before beginning trip. Ensure that products loaded onto trailer are stable and will not shift during transit and delivery; adjust load securement and load distribution as needed. Operate tablets/phones to record information regarding deliveries and begin navigation. Unsecure freight for delivery and unload freight at drop‑off location with a hand truck. Be available for around‑the‑clock shifts to accommodate freight movements and must be able to be away from home for extended periods of time. Job Qualifications Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Must have 12 months of previous tractor‑trailer driving experience and/or be a graduate of a State Certified and Licensed truck driving school, or have satisfactorily completed the Old Dominion truck driver training program (ODTDT 8/88). Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements. Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance, and extended periods of time. Must have working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems. Must be available for around‑the‑clock trips to accommodate freight movements and must be able to be away from home for extended periods of time. Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation; satisfactorily pass a drug test and an alcohol test (if applicable); and satisfactorily pass the orientation/training program instructions by an Old Dominion qualified driver trainer. Physical Demands Sitting: Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours. Standing/Walking: Must be able to stand and walk on surfaces such as concrete, pavement, wood, and metal and sometimes on slippery and wet surfaces. Bending/Stooping/Kneeling: Must be able to perform occasional squatting and kneeling to handle, position and secure freight; conduct pre‑trip inspections of trucks. Climbing: Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle’s cab 8 to 10 times a day; requires climbing, twisting, and balancing. Moving Materials: Must be able to frequently push freight weighing up to 500 pounds on a dolly or cart and occasionally heavier; pull freight weighing up to 500 pounds; carry freight weighing 1–100 pounds over at least 1 foot; and load and unload full trailers of freight weighing up to 50,000 pounds. Reaching: Must be able to frequently reach for freight at waist level; occasionally reach above shoulder height or below waist level; maneuver and direct truck controls. Other: Must be able to install and remove tire chains when required; use hands to get in and out of truck, wrap/unwrap shrink‑wrap, secure/unsecure pallets, use pallet jack or hand truck, use steering wheel, buttons on lift gates; shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals; use cognitive skills for safety logic and reasoning; attend to auditory and visual processing; and must be able to read, write, and speak English. Work Environment The work environment includes working with or around others while loading and unloading, working in an enclosed vehicle while driving, exposure to all weather conditions, varying noise and lighting levels, and the potential for extended periods on the road.
