Assistant State's Attorney I - Non-Merit

Regular Schedule: 35 hours per week. Assistant State’s Attorney I (Non‑Merit) A full‑time vacancy in the State's Attorney's Office for Baltimore County, Criminal Prosecution Division. Responsibilities The Assistant State’s Attorney (ASA) in District Court handles hundreds of cases a week, including must‑appear traffic cases such as DUI's, Hit & Runs, Fleeing and Eluding, Driving While Suspended, and Driving Uninsured, as well as criminal misdemeanor cases such as domestic assaults, thefts, auto thefts, identity thefts, and other miscellaneous misdemeanors. Each ASA is assigned multiple dockets a week (2‑3) and prepares files, communicates with defense attorneys, and appears in court to handle all cases on the docket. Overall, the unit handles approximately 30,000 cases per year. Other Duties Performs other duties as required. Qualifications Graduation from an ABA‑accredited law school. Licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland, or eligible to waive into the bar of the State of Maryland. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the Maryland Rules of Evidence, Local Rules for the District of Maryland, and applicable federal, state, and local law, including rules of professional responsibility. Knowledge of County’s best practices and procedures. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex matters. Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with others inside and outside the Office of Law. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks. Ability to maintain professionalism under pressure. Strong sense of ownership of tasks and responsibilities. Strong interpersonal skills to work with the public and various agencies. Strong drafting skills. Strong technology skills, including electronic discovery coordination and proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal research platforms such as Westlaw. Willingness to perform with minimal administrative support. Additional Requirements Applicants must submit proof of licenses, certifications, and education beyond high school to meet the required qualifications. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant’s major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Applicants who earned a degree outside the United States must provide equivalency documentation from World Education Services (WES). At the time of interview, applicants will be required to submit a Certificate of Good Standing from the Maryland Court of Appeals. Character and Citizenship All applicants must be of good moral character and emotionally stable, as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and drug test. All applicants must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment.
