We're seeking an experienced, licensed Professional Engineer (PE) who genuinely enjoys conducting site visits, solving structural challenges, and developing engineering solutions for residential projects.

Position Overview

We are looking for a Residential Structural Engineer to conduct on-site structural evaluations and complete the stamped engineering letters, calculations, and structural designs resulting from those visits.

We offer part-time to full-time opportunities, with compensation and workload tailored to the candidate's experience, availability, and responsibilities.

You'll evaluate existing residential structures, identify structural concerns, develop practical engineering solutions, and prepare the associated engineering documentation.

Full-time engineers are generally expected to complete 10–12 residential structural site visits per week, along with the resulting engineering deliverables. Part-time expectations will be adjusted proportionately based on the agreed-upon schedule and workload.

This position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys combining fieldwork with technical design, values professional independence, and wants to take ownership of projects from initial evaluation through completed engineering documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct residential structural engineering site visits throughout the Twin Cities metro area.
• Complete approximately 5–15 site visits per week for full-time employment, with adjusted expectations for part-time arrangements.
• Evaluate load-bearing walls, beams, foundations, floor systems, framing, and other residential structural components.
• Independently assess structural conditions and develop practical, code-compliant engineering solutions.
• Prepare structural calculations, engineering drawings, and designs resulting from site evaluations.
• Prepare and issue stamped structural engineering letters, inspection reports, and engineering designs as required.
• Develop structural solutions for load-bearing wall removals, beam installations, foundation repairs, and residential remodeling projects.
• Document existing conditions, field measurements, photographs, and structural findings.
• Communicate engineering findings and recommendations clearly to homeowners, contractors, and internal team members.
• Manage assigned projects from initial site evaluation through completion of engineering deliverables.
• Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable codes and professional standards.

Required Qualifications

• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license with the ability to practice engineering in Minnesota.
• Minimum 5 years of residential structural engineering experience.
• Strong knowledge of residential structural systems, framing, foundations, and applicable building codes.
• Experience conducting residential structural evaluations and inspections.
• Demonstrated ability to independently prepare structural calculations, engineering drawings, and designs.
• Experience preparing stamped structural engineering letters, reports, or design documents.
• Strong problem-solving skills and sound professional engineering judgment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple residential engineering projects and meet deadlines.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the Twin Cities metro area.
• Must genuinely enjoy conducting residential site visits and working directly with homeowners.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience conducting residential structural inspections and evaluations.
• Experience with load-bearing wall modifications, beam sizing, foundation repairs, and residential remodeling.
• Familiarity with residential construction methods and structural installation practices.
• Experience working directly with homeowners, residential contractors, and construction teams.
• Ability to independently manage multiple site evaluations and associated engineering deliverables.
• Proficiency with structural engineering and drafting software.

Compensation & Benefits

Annual Compensation Range: $85,000–$300,000

We recognize that experienced engineers have different scheduling preferences and levels of availability. We are open to part-time and full-time arrangements, with compensation structured around the individual's experience and agreed-upon workload.

Compensation will be determined by:

• Experience & Qualifications: Depth of residential structural engineering experience and ability to independently manage projects.
• Availability: Number of days and hours committed to the position.
• Site Visit Volume: Number of residential structural evaluations completed each week.
• Engineering Deliverables: Responsibility for completing stamped engineering letters, calculations, and structural designs resulting from site visits.

The upper end of the compensation range is intended for highly experienced engineers working full-time with site visit and engineering design responsibilities. Part-time compensation will be adjusted to reflect the agreed-upon schedule and workload.

• Company Vehicle or Mileage Reimbursement: Company vehicle arrangements negotiable, or mileage reimbursement at $0.52 per mile for eligible business travel.
• Technology & Equipment: Company-provided tablet, laptop, and required engineering software, as appropriate for the role.
• Professional Liability Insurance: Full Errors & Omissions (E&O) coverage under the company's policy for covered work.
