Grain Elevator Operator - Barge Facility Laborer

General laborer position responsible for operating and maintaining vessels and equipment used to handle freight, ensuring daily operational needs are met. Responsibilities Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings. Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable), including wearing appropriate PPE. Execute deckhand responsibilities such as reading drafts, opening/closing lids, and tying off barges. Load barges to meet draft and quality requirements, and oversee deckhand(s) as needed; note that ordinarily the most highly qualified person performs these duties. Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate locations when required. Maintain grain quality while it is stored and/or transferred. Complete documentation promptly, accurately, and legibly. Perform general clean‑up tasks including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other housekeeping responsibilities. Carry out preventative maintenance and/or repairs where applicable. Depending on the facility, may unload barges, clean barges, move products to storage, load trucks using heavy equipment, load rail, load products to required specifications, operate, run, monitor, and shut down dryer, and operate a variety of heavy equipment. Perform any additional duties as assigned. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. No experience required. Preferred: 1 year of experience in an industrial environment with a dependable work record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide). Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to interact with all levels of people within and outside the organization. Ability to complete documentation requirements. Ability to follow directions and use logical thought processes to interpret oral and written instructions, and troubleshoot problems. Ability to work independently and within a team environment. Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned tasks. Ability to remain focused on providing exceptional customer service, both internally and externally. Physical Demands & Requirements Ability to balance constantly/continuously. Ability to bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat (constantly/continuously) frequently. Ability to climb stairs and ladders to significant heights frequently. Ability to concentrate on task without becoming distracted, constantly/continuously. Ability to distinguish grain characteristics in samples (at some facilities). Ability to differentiate odors with a degree of accuracy using the nose. Ability to input information into a computer for observations and other tasks. Ability to reach and grasp frequently. Ability to lift, push, or pull 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously depending on daily needs. Ability to meet all applicable PPE requirements. Ability to meet PFT and fit testing requirements where applicable. Ability to pass all required testing under FRA and DOT for this position where applicable. Ability to work in confined spaces. Ability to safely walk on barge surface(s) and work around water. Ability to stand and walk constantly/continuously. Ability to understand and communicate verbally and in writing; recognize emergency alarms. Ability to operate vibrators, walk on top of railcars, open gates, and other equipment as required. Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed. Ability to work in environments with high dust levels in grain and other bulk products. Ability to work outdoors under extreme weather conditions. Ability to adjust quickly to changes in environment. Uses near, far, and peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks, including identifying grain problems. Ability to work rotating 12‑hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours at the Convent, LA location. Ability to travel 5%-20% of the time for off‑site training and work at alternate locations. Compensation Expected base pay range: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour.
