Job Description Budget Title: Instructional Support Specialist (SL-4) Salary: $80,000 - $90,000 The Occupational Safety Specialist supports the University’s environmental health and safety programs by developing, implementing, and evaluating occupational health, laboratory safety, hazardous materials and waste management. This position works collaboratively across academic, research, and animal care environments to promote regulatory compliance and a safe teaching and research environment. Key Responsibilities Develop, coordinate, promote, and assess occupational health and safety policies, programs, and procedures. Monitor and communicate changes in applicable OSHA, New York State, and other regulatory requirements affecting University operations. Design and deliver safety training programs and workshops for faculty, staff, students, and other members of the University community. Recommend corrective actions, controls, and procedures to reduce workplace hazards and improve safety performance. Partner with the campus Radiation Safety Officer and Biosafety Officer to support compliance with federal, state, local and campus sponsor safety requirements Respirator fit testing, respiratory protection compliance, and recordkeeping. SV SIV annual inspections Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR)/IACUC Support Provide occupational health and safety guidance related to allergens, zoonoses, biological, chemical, and physical hazards in campus care facilities. Conduct periodic inspections of vivaria and communicate significant hazards or deviations from established policies and procedures. Collaborate with Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (JACUC), and the Attending Veterinarian on exposure control procedures, safe work practices and hazard mitigation. Support training and implementation of personal protective equipment (PPE), personal hygiene practices, respiratory protection, and safe handling of biohazardous substances, radioactive materials, and regulated medical waste. Evaluate use of inhalation anesthetics and provide guidance and training as appropriate. Review research protocols to identify health and safety risks specific to animal care and research activities. Review accident and injury reports related to animal care environments, track adverse health outcomes, and recommend preventive health measures including vaccinations, audiometric testing, respiratory protection, and allergy follow-up. Laboratory and Facilities Safety Position interacts with the following: Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) IBC Member Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) Office of Research Compliance Academic science departments Physical Facilities Human Resources University Health Services Other EHS Staff Controlled substance committee Respiratory protection program Accident Reporting and review process Chemical exposure evaluation and determination The Occupational Safety Specialist reports to the Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety and may supervise student employees. Requirements Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in occupational safety, environmental health, biological sciences, public health, or related field Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, laboratory safety practices, and hazard assessment principles Ability to work effectively with faculty, researchers, staff, and regulatory stakeholders Preferred Qualifications Master of Public Health or equivalent Two (2) or more years’ relevant experience in occupational safety Certification in Occupational Health Experience with training development, incident review, inspections, and compliance programs Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
