Med-Surg RN Job Breakdown (Short)

Shift: 12-hr Nights (18:30–07:00)
Weekly Hours: 36 guaranteed (48 optional)
Unit: Med-Surg (45-bed teaching hospital)
Ratio: Nights 1:5–7
Charting: EPIC (recent experience required)

Core Responsibilities

• Direct Med-Surg Care: ~18–20 hrs/week
  Post-op, CHF, COPD, sepsis, GI bleed, ortho, respiratory, COVID cases
• Clinical Procedures & Skills: ~6–7 hrs/week
  IV starts, chest tubes, drains, PEG/NG care, ostomies, CBI
• Medication & Treatment Management: ~5–6 hrs/week
  Heparin/Cardizem drips, blood products, remote telemetry monitoring
• Assessment & Critical Thinking: ~4–5 hrs/week
  High-volume patient assessment, condition changes, escalation of care
• Documentation (EPIC): ~4–5 hrs/week
  Charting, care plans, NIHSS/dysphagia screening documentation
• Coordination & Floating: ~3–4 hrs/week
  Cross-campus float (2-hour notice), team communication, charge support

Key Requirements

• Active compact RN license
• BLS + NIHSS required
• 2+ years strong Med-Surg experience + 1 travel assignment
• EPIC experience (recent mandatory + check-off class)
• Must be flexible, resilient, strong critical thinking
• Teaching hospital → may precept students/new hires
• No local candidates (40-mile rule)
• Max 3 call-ins allowed (strict policy)
