Lead Electrical Technician

Commissioning & Startup – Leading field execution for new installations and brownfield expansions to verify system readiness and design compliance. Protective Relay Services – Physical installation, wiring, and functional validation of electromechanical and microprocessor‑based protective relaying systems. Troubleshooting & Fault Analysis – On‑site fault investigations and RootCause Analysis (RCA) using event reports and diagnostic testing. Specialized Field Data – Data collection for grounding systems, power quality monitoring, and thermal analysis. Modernization Projects – Field execution of relay retrofits, breaker upgrades, and control circuit modifications for existing infrastructure. Job Description The Electrical Field Services Technician reports to the Field Service Manager and is responsible for onsite execution of testing, commissioning, and maintenance for low, medium, and high‑voltage power systems. This role involves both hands‑on apparatus testing and the validation of protective relaying logic. Typical tasks include: Apparatus Testing – Perform acceptance and maintenance testing on switchgear, MCCs, transformers, circuit breakers, and cable systems. Diagnostic Procedures – Operate test equipment to perform power factor, winding resistance, TTR, insulation resistance, contact resistance, and VLF/AC/DC Hi‑Pot testing. Protective Relay Services – Perform relay testing using various secondary current and voltage injection test sets. Read and write settings for microprocessor‑based relays such as GE Multilin, Schweitzer, ABB, and Siemens. Control Circuits – Troubleshoot and function test breaker control circuits, interlocking schemes, and motor control logic. Technical Reporting – Document field observations and test data accurately to produce technical reports and as‑built drawing markups. Modifications – Perform light electrical construction related to retrofits, including rewiring control panels and installing short runs of conduit or tray for new components. Job Qualifications Experience – Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical testing, preventive maintenance, and commissioning. Experience equivalent to NETA Level II or III is preferred. Education – High School Diploma required. Technical school, apprenticeship completion, or an associate’s degree in Electrical Power/Instrumentation is preferred. Work Authorization – Must have the legal right to work in the United States. Root 3 Power does not provide immigration or work visa sponsorship. Technical Proficiency – Practical knowledge of three‑phase power, AC/DC control circuits, and instrument transformers. Ability to read and interpret one lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Competency with standard electrical hand tools and specialized test equipment. Safety & Compliance – Strong commitment to NFPA 70E and industrial safety practices. Must hold or be eligible to obtain a TWIC card. Must have a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record. Physical Requirements – Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in industrial environments wearing proper PPE, including climbing ladders and walking over uneven surfaces. Professional Competencies – Ability to identify and resolve technical problems in a timely manner. Ability to remain professional and composed under stressful field situations. Clear communication skills for interacting with clients and presenting technical data accurately. Site Access – Ability to pass drug/alcohol screening and background checks as required by industrial client sites. Reliability – Consistently arrive at meetings and site appointments on time. Ensure work responsibilities are covered when absent. Language – Must be able to speak, write, and understand English to follow complex procedures and generate accurate test reports.
